When I use my emboss folders in my CB I only have to use the typical sandwich , but if I was to emboss a thin die , or a spellbinders die edge, I need something thinker for the embossing. Spellbinders sell a mat for that, but I didn't have one on hand so I had to come up with my own solution and used a leftover piece of foam core poster board. Works really well but you can only use it a few times before you have to replace it for another piece. I plan to purchase a mat , but in the meantime I can modify .
A plumbers gasket available at Lowes or Home Depot works quite well as an embossing mat.
Mine is 6" square, red rubber. It is about 1/8" thick, almost too thick for my machine but works well. No, they are very cheap. I think we paid $1.95 each but we had to ask for them as they were up on a shelf out of sight at Lowes.

Your post is from August - but if you are still considering the Craftwell eBosser, you can get it on HSN. Flex pay $39 x 5. $55 gets it home. You can use any dies and do not have to purchase any additional equipment to use. I just decided to get this because I spend so much time with my CB cutting out shapes. By the time I am done I lose the passion for the project . Plus I have some arthritis and I think this will help me a lot.
Anyway - wasn't sure if you had made your decision or not - but wanted to share that its easy to bring home right now!
Binx, My vote is for the Vagabond. You're covered if you ever want to cut heavier materials. I love the quality and customer support of Sizzix. I have a regular Big Shot. A while back I got the Vagabond because of the convenience of an electric machine - the Vagabond is incredibly easy to use and makes non-electronic die cutting a breeze
If you need a larger format machine, I don't have one but others on SCS love their Big Shot Pro so you might want to check that out.

I just tried my new Craftwell Embosser - forgot to take out the embossing mat from the platform - the plates got stuck in the machine. Figured this out and tried again and it went through fine. Then I decided to emboss - the plates cut through the embossing mat. Now what? I was using the new card dies from Spellbinder - so the cuts to the embossing mat are pretty extensive. Has this happened to anyone before? Did I do something wrong that caused this? I checked the directions for thin die embossing and this show doing it this way. I guess I have to find a new embossing mat...LOL
I blew apart my old cuttlebug in December and a dear friend sent me a big shot. The cuttlebug split in two! Tonight my big shot started making this rumble sound and feeling when I crank anything through. I use all types of wafer dies (MB, nesties, cheery, sizzix, etc) and use a thin metal detail plate with many of the dies. The big shot will not cut a any wafer die without multiple shims now in addition to the metal plate. This is my biggest fear regarding the purchase of an electric machine. I'd hate to wear it out and if you have to shim, it voids the warranty it seems. Metal plates are sold everywhere but I haven't seen any machine Manu recommend the use. Only the die manufacturers or distributors use them. Consequently I'm using a stack that voids warranties. Anyone else having trouble with hand crank machines? Perhaps I use it too much....

I am on my second Bigshot machine. The first lasted 5 or 6 years. The second one started doing what you described after only 6 months. It is under warranty for 3 years so just call them and they will tell you what to do in order to get new parts to fix it. I must say that if my hubby wasn't handy that I doubt I could have gotten it back together again. it is not real easy. But, they do stand behind their product and are prompt. Good Luck!
