Okay you GIGA PUNCH Enablers.... I have a funny to share with you. I discovered something else that I use use those punches (or any punch really) for today.
My paying job is as a special education teacher. Right now I am frantically working on Alternate Assessment Portfolios (just means these kids on portfolio do not take the BENCHMARK tests mandated by the state) in Literacy, Math and Science.
For each area I have to do 2 worksheets and then a photo narrative (about 700 pictures will be used for 5 kids  )
Anyway today I was working on the Science portion of the dang portfolio. Had to have a photo documentation plus narrative for Newton's 3rd Law of Motion ---- LOL I used photos of the kids using the GIGA PUNCHES....
Newton's Law says for every force there is an equal and opposite reaction. You push the lever down, and it comes back up! LOL
So I guess we can label my punches as:
1. Craft items
2. Science Experiment Items
3. Occupational Therapy Fine Motor Control items
Oops I said 2 worksheets per area... It is 2 worksheets and 1 photo documentation with accompanying narrative per item in each area. So English has 9 areas and 3 entries each (27 worksheets/9 photo doc +narrative) per kid. Math has 10 areas and 3 entries each (30 worksheets/10 photo doc + narratives) per kid. Science has 6 areas and 3 entries each (18 worksheets + 6 photo doc + narrative) per kid. I have to do this on 5 different students... Now the 700+ photos and my excitement makes more sense. One more done! WOOHOO... March 15 cannot come fast enough to get this off my hands!
And to boot, I just got my mail and a lovely box from a friend in Utah who found me and sent me:
Mega Scalloped Circle
Mega Scalloped Square
Now I have all the Mega and Giga scalloped Clever Lever punches in circles, squares and ovals!
Stormy, that is a question I ask alot too!!! I take one period a day (and vary it daily which period) for the past 6 weeks to do this. Soon it will be over and I can teach my regular full day again.
Jen,
There is always an educational use for the products....lol.... occupational therapy is the best. After all it is fine motor skills to use stamps, punches, die cut machines....
What an awesome story -- TFS!! But I'm wondering, wouldn't the lever pushing upwards on the children's hands as they push down on the lever be demonstrating Newton's third law? I did terribly at classical mechanics, so I'm probably wrong, but was just curious. I hope the portfolios come together as quickly and smoothly as they possibly can!!!
The giga punch photos were taken to demonstrate Newton's third law.
The science section is the hardest for me because I never had a good science teacher and hated the courses. In fact, in my high school (eons ago) you could take 2 yrs of Agri or 2 yrs of Home Ec or 1 year Science.
I took 3 years of Home Ec and the rest of my classes were those college bound courses. I had to pick up one semester Physical and one semester Biology in college and that was all I ever had since leaving the 8th grade.
Now I moved back to Arkansas and am teaching a self contained classroom. This year it added a Science class back in my teaching area. UGH UGH UGH... The other 5 self contained classes I love teaching (READING/LANG ARTS, FUNCTIONAL ACADEMICS, MATH, INDEPENDENT LIVING and SOCIAL STUDIES). I even can handle teaching one unit of RESOURCE ENGLISH. But that Science class.......... ugh ugh ugh....
Thankfully I have a friend who is a Science Specialist and she travels around the state. She brings me these awesome kits to teach out of -- and the kids love them. Just wish Science was not anything I had to fool with .....
