Default ATG gun with no brakes....

Seems like I have seen this problem mentioned before, but couldn't locate a thread on it. My ATG gun seems to have no "brakes", in other words it does not allow the tape to get tight so that you can break the adhesive...everything is just very sloppy. Does this mean a piece of it has broken? Anyone know how to make it work right again? I like this tool when it works!! Thank you.

My guess would be that one of your spools was not firmly attached to the tool core. Just a guess though....

Is your tape refill correctly in place on the spool? I just realized that mine hadn't 'clicked' into place and that was the heart of my problem. The plastic ring in the middle of the refill has holes/slots in it that have to 'sit' properly on the spool. I have a 3M 714 and The Tape Depot ATG 50. In both ATGs, there is a little nub on the spool where the center of the refill goes and must 'click' into place-the refill should be flat against the backing of the spool area. It's kinda hard to describe but look at the refill spool area without a refill on. I think you will see what I mean.

Good luck!

Thank you. Ihave checked that. Part of the problem seems to be that the roll of adhesive is not actually attached to the white plastic core, which allows it so spin. Seems like that could possibly be causing the problem. Or maybe it isn't necessary for the tape to be tightly attached to the white core...I don't know!

I use the 1/4" tape and have to handle the refills carefully when placing them on the spool. The tape is heavy because of the adhesive so be very carefully not to 'pop' out the plastic core

I checked and the little nub is clicked into place, but, being that the white core popped out, and I had to fiddle to get it as well as the tape onto the spool...I am wondering if popping the core has rendered this roll of tape useless? Seems like it would have to be solidly attached to the core to allow the tape to just not spin while being used, or spinning while trying to break lose the adhesive. Thanks to all who have written. I like the price of the refills, but am getting headaches trying to make it work!

I'm pretty sure it is just the roll you are using. If you try a different roll and it still won't work right, maybe try calling 3M. All of my rolls of adhesive have been very securely attached to the plastic core. I don't think it would work if they weren't!
