Default ? about weight of paper

I wanted to get a large stack of heavy, white paper. So, I checked my SU stash and saw that it was 80lb paper. So, I went to the office supply store and bought 90lb paper thinking it would be as thick or thicker than SU paper. Well, it's thinner and flimsier. What gives? Can someone explain this to me? I opened the package, so I'm sure I can't take it back.

No idea, but great question. I've been wondering the same thing myself. I almost made the same purchase, now I'm glad that I did not. Can't wait to hear what everybody has to say. Thanks for asking!

The Georga Pacific cs at Walmart is very close to SU white and it is 110lb. A lot of the stampers on here use it. I think it is around $5.00 for a ream.

I bought the GP110 paper before buying WW -- but it's still kind of flimsy as a base - do others find this as well??

So I still don't understand. 20 lb. paper is like printer paper. And a ream is 144 sheets, right? So as the weight increases per ream, the thickness of the paper should increase, also right?

Ugh. Paper weight is confusing - even for people in paper-related industries. :-)

Here are some resources that have some good explanations:

Well, technically, but not all paper comes in a ream (500 sheets). Some packs have 250 sheets (as this one I just bought), some packs have 100 and so on. But if 2 packs of paper, both with = number of sheets, then the heavier pack should be the thicker paper. Obviously not counting packaging.

Purplescrapper, I did the same thing and they let me return it. I just explained that the weight of the paper did not meet my expectations and that I had 80lb paper that was heavier than their 90lb. They didn't ask any questions (and I doubt they even cared).

I bought my cardstock at www.papermatters.com. Look under "specialty paper", then "cover", then Beckett Expressions. Their Iceberg is the same as SU WW.

I did call and the store is going to let me return it. They even offered to open their 110lb paper and let me feel it and I could get that instead. We'll see. I'm not going to use it for stamping. I was just using my SU paper as a "standard" to decide what weight to buy. I guess I misunderstood how the system works!

I'm not sure but I think 90 lb. paper weight is different than 90 lb. cardstock weight.
