Default Help! Embossing without heatgun???

Hi All, I've just got EP for the first time. I haven't bought the heat gun yet, and I just want to play with it NOW!!! (Instead of waiting till I go to a friends house)

I thought I read a post somewhere here...can't find it now. Can you use the EP in your regular oven/stove? If so how does it work?
Thanks in advance, because I know some of you have the answer!!

It is possible to use a regular stove element, but it's a little tricky. And use tongs and an oven mitt too! Just turn the burner on medium heat, then when it's hot wave the paper (with the embossing powdered image facing down) evenly and slowly over the heat. You have to be careful b/c the paper can get brown spots from too much heat and can curl up. Check the image often to see if some parts are melting, b/c once it starts it will happen fast!

Let it cool off, then put in a heavy book for awhile to straighten out.

HTH! Have fun!

Years back, before I had a heat gun, I used my toaster. Just hold your paper over the toaster and the EP will melt. DO NOT put the paper in the slot!

When I first started, I used a wall paper stripping heat gun - as others have mentioned watch it close or it will burn. The embossing gun is well worth the price

I've heard that you can use your iron, too--set it on a dry setting and hold it a few inches from your cardstock. Before I got a heat gun, I just held stuff over a burner on my electric stove, but I scorched a few pieces!
Good luck!

You can turn your iron upside down and balance it in a bread pan.
You can lay your CS on the warming element on your Mr. Coffee machine.
You can hold the CS close to a lightbulb.. this was probably the first wasy stampers experimented and IMHO the dumbest.. It works fine but looking at that lightbulb is murder on your eyes.
Do not try your hair dryer.. too much wind and it will blow your powder away.
You can also lay the paper on your electric griddle. For several years I had a small electric griddle just to do embossing.
Good Luck.

When I used to use my iron to emboss, I'd set it on its butt( how you set it to move the shirtetc..) so the hotplate is verticle(sp)Then use a butter knife to hold the BACK of your CS against the hot iron. Don't put the front against the iron or you'll end up with EP on your iron. Can you say 'learned the hard way'?;)

LOL, I remember the old days of heat embossing without the heat tool! Klutzy as I am, I wound up using a light bulb as the heat source. It's a bit slower, but ever so much safer for me!

The toaster works great. Just hold your card over the opening and move it back and forth until the EP is all melted.

Another toaster embosser here. Works for me (I don't do a lot of embossing, though). *Years* ago I used my iron. If I remember right, I held the iron above the item that needed to be embossed. Don't use steam, though :-).

Years ago, I used a toaster, but eventually bought a heat gun. I also ready once that you can use the flame of a candle, but I'd guess that would be tricky b/c the flame could easily burn your paper.

Use a not stick frying pan on a element turned low. Then I used a wooden spoon to make sure the paper contacted the pan. I can remember my mom helping me emboss when I was little (before the days of heat guns).

Before I had a heat gun, I tried the iron, oven, stove top, a candle and an oil lamp (only once when the power was out). I would not recommend the candle or the oil lamp because it is too easy to burn the paper. The iron worked best.

I used my toaster too, until I got a heat gun for Christmas. My heat gun just died though, (non SU) so I'm back to the toaster. This has made me appreciate how great a good heat gun is. I'm going to put a SU! one on my next order!

Before the heat gun, I used a hot plate and tongs. When I did a lot of embossing at one time I even laid the cards on a cookie sheet and held it under the broiler, which actually worked quite well. Don't tell the power company though...we're supposed to be conserving!

One of my customers bought a $2.00 electric fry pan at a yard sale & swears by it. Says she can save her other funds for stamps.

Oh my gosh you all are sOOOOOOO brave! Two years ago at convention Shelli was showing a clip of an old SU promo video and they were embossing with a stove burner. She joked that there were lots of scorched edges. Talk about a fire hazard! Again YOU ALL ARE SO BRAVE! I use my heat tool for embossing AND stripping wallpaper. WOrks great.

I wouldn't say I was smart, just old. I embossed my college graduation announcments with a 100 watt bulb-- all 100 of them. Heat guns had just come out and we were too cheap to buy one. After we had finished be pulled together our money and went down and bought one. I was seeing spots for days!
