Default Updating a File Cabinet

New to this site (and loving it!). I have an old 6 drawer file cabinet that is ugly. Don't think I want to take the time to paint it as someone said I'd have to sand it first.

Do you think I could use scrapbook paper and decoupage it on the sides and drawers? Any other ideas that would work better?

Thanks
Sharon

Default File Cabinet suggestions

You could use the spray paint for metal for a good base. I don't think you have to sand unless there is a lot of rust. Then cover the front with some of the beautiful patterned paper and or die cuts....like flowers on the sides or stars....creat a theme and make it beautiful. I saw some of these done on TV at various times and they were great. Also, contac paper works. Let us know what you did.

When they said sand it, I don' think they meant 'down to the metal' but just enough to scuff up the surface so it would accept the spray paint without peeling. I did this with a smaller two drawer one I picked up at a garage sale and sprayed it with a hammered metal finish. Looks great.

BUT.....if you are going to put it in a stamp room, I'd go for decopaging it just because it would look fun!

Default painting a file cabinent

I have heard that you can take it to a place that paints cars. You might have to wait until they are painting a color that you want, but the paint job will last a lot longer.
