Well ladies, I finally ventured out and tried to make some of those adorable 4 x 4 tumbled tiles and I'M HOOKED!!!! Thanks so much for all of your wonderful words of wisdom. However, I really want to make some trivets and I'm wondering what type of tile and size anyone has used to make these (and where you bought them from). I bought the 4 x 4 Botticino tumbled tiles from Home Depot but I didn't see anything that I thought would be appropriate for a trivet. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
My HD has the same tiles in a totally different area in a 6 x 6 size that are perfect for trivettes. There's a whole section of 6 x 6 tiles in both HD and Lowes. Good luck! They have a good variety at both as long as you find the section as it is not next to the place where the tumbled tiles are ~ just a little over to the right at my store.
While we are on the subject of tumbled tiles.....today I have been experimenting and find that I don't have any luck stamping with the chalk pastels directly on the tile and baking. They just came out blurry! Yesterday someone said they used the chalk pastels and had good luck. I did have great luck by stamping the image with stazon and rubbing on the chalk with q-tips. Then I baked at 350 for 20 minutes. What are you people coloring with? Would the stamp n write markers work?
I would like to hang my 4x4 tiles (like a framed picture without the frame). Does anyone know how/what to put on the back of the tile to hang it from/with. I would rather not use plate holders. Thanks in advance for your help.
Hi Ragmop,
What I've used on tiles for hangers is a pop top and epoxy glue to glue it on. We've done this for years with tiles my children have made for mom or dad as gifts.

only sharpies, or permanent markers like Fabrico markers would work - not water based. When I use the pastels, I will stamp image with StazOn first, then heat set with the heat gun - dries quickly. Then use the chalks, I find it's not necessary to bake these. Then you spray a clear sealer like Krylon. See if that works better
are you buying special tiles for this? would you be able to use the tiles used for the shower?? I have lots left over from redoing my bathroom!! lol. It would be great if they could be used for something. would i bake these???
the shiny finished tiles I had a lot of trouble with the stamps coming off even after heat setting, I embossed a bunch only to have them wipe off as well. I have been experimenting with the modge podge and tissue paper. I did not have great luck keeping the embossing powder on them either.

I have only used the shiny tiles to do small magnets and used staz-on and sharpies - I have had some problem with the image coming off the shiney tiles even with baking.
I am going to look at my HD this weekend and see if I can't find the larger tiles - I have done a bunch of the 4X4 tumbled tiles using Staz-on and sharpies...
BUT here is the thing in using Staz-on and sharpies - BEFORE coloring in with sharpies you need to heat set your Staz-on - (I used my embossing gun for a few minutes) - IF NOT when you go to color with your sharpie you can actually pick up some of the Staz-on color and "muddy" your coloring.
I have some tumbled tiles in my gallery - some were done with just Staz-on (the one with the flip-flops and Hope is... set) and I baked those in a 300 degree oven for about 15 minutes. I loved those little things BUT my daughter found an ink pen and scribbled all over the 2 I had left - I scrubbed those suckers with just about every type of cleaning product I had and nothing budged - Since they are ruined I am going to try some other solvents (Staz-on Cleaner, rubbing alcohol and polish remover) and see what happens...

the aluminum pop top you pull back to open a can of soda.
The gal at our local Girl Talk Greenware ceramic studio taught me this trick. It's a cheap fix and does the job nicely, just don't skimp on the epoxy or it won't hold very well. I put a BIG gob of epoxy on the backs of our tiles to ensure a good application.
HTH & have fun crafting!

I am in a remote location and the nearest Lowes or Home Depot is 4-5 hours away. Is there anywhere I could find tumbled tiles online?
I tried the online Home Depot and could not find them on the website. Where do you find them and in what section of the store when you are in the store?
Anyone have any other ideas on how to get my hands on them?? They look so cute I want to try it!
Are they called "tumbled tiles" in the store?
Thanks

I haven't seen any online sites. The tiles are so heavy and fragile, shipping would be really hard and really expensive. One drop and they would crumble, hence why some of us cop a squat to find decent batches. I've been known to take up to an hour to get a couple of boxes together.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help. The actually name is boticchino tiles, if that helps.
If you look at the top of this page, right under the gold title bar, there are a couple of ads re:marble tiles. I have never checked into them, but this may be an option for you!?
HTH!

Just last night I found a 6x6 tumble tile at Lowe's and paid 88 cents. I have made the smaller tiles to use as coasters and have also used the Stazon with Sharpies. My only difference...use your Sharpies with your blender pens! I just hold my Sharpie with one hand and touch the tip of the blender onto the Sharpie tip then color! I feel I have more control as the colors don't get quite so vivid and you get a beautiful look. You can always go darker this way! Sharpies has all of those wonderful earth tones and they turn out beautifully! Ü
Could someone tell me what section you found the 6x6 tumbled tiles in since they aren't w/ the other ones? I get lost in HD!!! Now, Michael's or Hobby Lobby, I can map out in my sleep!
I have stazon, sharpies in multiple shades, pastels, and PN spray--- and smaller tiles. Just need some time to try this!

They are near, but not on the same aisle. If you ask the associate for flooring, you should find them against a wall in a nice display. Usually in the back near the restrooms.
Does using the Krylon sealer work for hot stuff? I called Krylon and they told me they thought it would not work. I have been using using spray paint for car engines from Auto Zone. It is heat safe up to 500 degrees. This works really well on the tumbled tiles. I don't reccomend it for the smooth, gloosy tiles though. On these, it bubbled and peeled after several uses.
I have made it my personal mission to stop all use of Krylon on tiles. I use Patricia Nimock and it is heat resistant. My fear of the engine paint would be it's safety near food. I don't like the idea of putting something for my engine in my kitchen near my food.
Oh, I"m so glad I got Patricia N. spray this time! I didn't realize they weren't all heat resistant!
Love the directions to find the 6x6 tiles---I'll ask for the potties! On second thought, in HD, they'd then show me their selection of new ones, wouldn't they???
