Default Stupid Question?

I know this is probably the most simple and stupid question, but I am new to all of this. I was just wondering what is the average card size? The only cards I've done are just 8.5x11" cardstock folded in half. I've seen blank cards for sale. Does anyone use these? When you make your own card, what do you do for envalopes? Is there an average card size?

most are a half sheet of 8.5 x 11 cardstock and so are 4.25 x 5.5. These are also called A4 size (but I do not know the background on the A4 name). A4 is a standard size and envelopes are easy to find for that size. You can get them at office supply stores or craft stores. I have become addicted to SU cardstock. It is heavier (thicker) than other card stock so the cards "feel" more substantial and they always will stand up on their own without flopping over. Blank cards can be fine, if the cardstock is heavy enough. I bought some, but hardly ever use them.

Default card size

I make mine with a half a sheet of cs most of the time..8.5 x 5.5..fold in half this makes an A-2 size card and envelope. They are also known as invitation envelopes...a great site is astrobrights...just ordered envelopes for my group very cheap...much less than in a store..if you know any other stampers that may want to go in on it with you, larger orders save a little on s/h.
You can also get A-2 clear bags to either store or mail your cards in on ebay. I get them through uniquepacking ..and I LOVE them..but if you get any make sure you get the ones that have the adhesive on the bag not the flap I think it has a (P) on the title. I also use Georgia pacific 110 lb white card stock for the bases on white cards, I think it is stronger than SU and if I am adding layers which I almost always do, it is a huge money saver too.
hope this helps

This really was GREAT information. Thank you so much! I'll be on the lookout for those envalopes. Not sure if I'm ready to sell my cards just yet. I need some practice. I wonder if I'll ever be half as good as those cards I see in the gallery.:( You guys are great though, and I'm sure I'm going to learn so much more on my stamping journey. Thank you!

hmmm- two people with different 'names' for the 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 card. Is it A-4 or A-2?

I just buy my envelopes at Staples. They call them "invitation envelopes" and I get them in a box of 250 for around $15.00.

FYI, this is also known as size A2.

A2 and invitation size are all the same thing. Card size is 4.25x5.5 (starts with cardstock measuring 8.5x5.5)....envelope is 1/4 larger to accomodate. This is based on US measurements. I believe European measurements are a bit different and go by a different name.

Exception......there may be some difference with manufacturers making an invitation card a tad different measurement (those found at AC Moore or Michaels for instance. Also the pre-packaged cards/envelope sets though they may say A2 or invitation I find to be a tad smaller than the standard 4.25x5.5 size.

Yes, the European sizes are a bit different as A4 paper is measured in cm (21 x 29 cm which is about 8.25" x 11.75") and is a bit longer and narrower than US paper - so the envelopes are also a bit bigger than the regular US envelopes.
