I looked at some samples online. This what it looks like to me.
Add you add soot to your cardstock.
Seal it!
Now instead of taking soot off like in the regular soot stamping, just stamp over it with stazon (after you sealed your soot with acrylic sealer).

I don't subscribe to the newsletter anymore...but that's what it looks like to me.

Default How toy do Reverse Soot Stamping:

Supplies needed:

Glossy Cardstock
Versamark
Image - more detailed the better
Candle (cheap pillar works great) don't trim the wick
Cotton balls (not swabs)
Sealing spray (clear)
Tub of water or near sink in case paper starts on fire!

This technique is the opposite of the traditional soot technique.

1) Stamp image onto the Glossy Cardstock with Versamark.
2) Light candle and run the glossy cardstock through the flame, using circular motions, until the cardstock is blackened with soot.
3) After it is completely blackened let set for a couple of minutes.
4) Take the cotton balls and GENTLY wipe away the soot. You will see the image as the Versamark will hold the soot to the image.
5) Spray with a clear sealer and let dry then attach to card front.
