Question about how to paint altered clipboards...

Hi all,
I am attempting my first altered clipboards (I know I'm behind the times) and I have a question. In all the directions I've found, only Beate's tutorial mentions how to paint/mod podge around the clip. She says to insert a penny. I'm just not getting it. How the heck do I paint / mod podge the whole thing and keep the clip up as to not get in the paint?

What I did to the clipboards I altered was: I had my dh squeeze the clip part open, and I twisted a double twist tie through the ring (double for more strength). It was then held open the maximum distance apart while I put on modpodge, paper, etc. Worked GREAT! Just be careful when you release the twist tie, 'cause it can really snap shut!!!! (Ask me how I know!!! ) If you are using the more bar type ones, then I don't know if they have an opening to do this or not.
