I think the egg shape would give them more of the pinecone shape, but I've also seen them using the round styrofoam.

You could also use sequins (pinning each one, or glueing a sequin string around the ball). But then, they would be "ornament" not "pinecone."

You could always make your own fun flock by grating the styrofoam balls over a bowl and adding a bit of dye to them. Here's a tutorial stating rubbing two cut styrofoam balls together and using re-inkers to color the flock:

I made some up with material of bright oranges, reds, rust. It was fall leaves. I made them for decorations for Thanksgiving. They turned out awsome!

Have you tried them using different shades of the same color on the same ball (Ombr)? That would be gorgeous! Or how about making spirals using two or four colors (it would definately take some thinking and planning!) on a third color background (like red and green on white, or yellow and lavendar on pink, etc.)?

Here is a link to the ball ornament. It seems that is can also be called 'pineapple' style. This is with fabric but they mentioned that other materials can be used.

cmarmg,

Can you imagine what the fabric "pineapples" would look like in lame or the tissue lames? Or velvet? Ooooooooo!

And those Paper Pineapple Ornaments...look at the texture! Isn't it interesting that the paper points are upside down, showing the seam? It works!

One question asked and look how many projects we get! Much love to all the crafters on Splitcoaststampers!
