Cool paint can

I realize that making a "paint can" is just that but, I have alot of cans that my husband says is too expensive to get rid of because of recycling charges so I might as well make good use of them. Does anyone have a good way to clean them with minimal mess?

I don't have any tips, but good luck. Cleaning up any kind of paint has always been a messy chore for me (dh gets it everywhere!!!!)
