Question heat embossing help please

I have dry embossed a design on heavy cardstock and now I want to add some color, by heat embossing, to the dry embossed design. How can I apply embossing ink? I know it must be possible. The only thing I can come up with is to use a VersaMarker watermark pen.....is this the only way?

Thank you in advance for any help.

I've never tried heat embossing after dry embossing, but it sounds like you're on the right track. Stamping an image in VersaMark or embossing ink would probably crush the dry embossing.

If you dry embossed with a template, you can turn the template over and position it on the raised side of the cardstock, so that the raised area comes through the template. Then press your versamark or embossing ink over the template and only the dry embossed (raised areas) should have ink on them when you take the template away. Add powder, heat and you're done.

When heat embossing, how do you keep the powder from staying on the paper where you don't want it?

The Versamark Ink or embossing ink (pigment) holds the powder to the image. The embossing powder will not typically stick to areas of the paper that has no ink holding it. To be sure, you can use an embossing buddy or cornstarch poof before you stamp the embossing ink and it will "repell" the embossing powder from the plain paper.

You can also use a fine brush to brush away any stray grains of powder before you heat it.

Default Embossing Perfection

I've been embossing BEB (B4 Embossing Buddy). It took awhile to remind myself, but I get MUCH better results when I remember to use the Embossing Buddy to destatic the paper b4 I emboss it.

I've never had much luck embossing with the VersaMarker. I think the idea of covering the cardstock with the brass template again & then rubbing the VersaMark Pad over would yield better results.

It'll be interesting to see what you come up with.

I just tried heat embossing using a small Cuttlebug embossing folder, an Versamark inkpad, my Big Kick and heat tool. I had really good results. At my LSS they use a Big Shot to dry emboss with regular brass stencils (with a rubber mat). So... maybe if you brayer Versamark onto the stencil before you put it through a Big Shot / Big Kick / Cuttlebug, then sprinkle on embossing powder and heat...

Of course this would only allow you to heat emboss the flat/lower(?) portion of the dry embossing...

I use a Sakura quickie glue pen to do detailed embossing. I love it way more than the versamark pen. You get finer more raised lines (though the lines do have a little texture to them) :0)

Try not to handle the paper/card too much as the natural grease from fingers attracts the powder.

If you haven't got an embossing buddy (I haven't) then a neat trick is to get some talc powder and put it in a cotton sock. Baby socks are fab as the size is convenient and rub it over the card/paper before stamping and sprinkling powder.

And of course a fine paintbrush is always handy as I think there's nearly always a couple of bits of powder. My problem is I get carried away trying to be a perfectionist and end up taking powder from the main image!
