What do you use the lighter for? For gettign the bubbles out?
I've just been huffing on them .. and when I start to get giddy I'll use the heatgun from a distance.
Wish I had a Bunnings (and a spotlight!) nearby - I'm sure I'd be there once a week at least!
You can use pictures on the coasters but you coat the coaster after painting with a sealer which also acts as an adhesive. When this is dry you brush another coat of the same sealer over the paper to seal. You have to be very careful at this stage as you think it looks sealed but when the gloss is poured on it can seep underneath and cause a discolouration to the paper. The brand of sealer which I use sells the sealer as well in a large tub. But as I was never happy with the finished results I now stick to stamping.
I told you so. I have a set of four and a half of a set waiting to be glossed.
One of the sets is for a birthday present at the end of November so I had better get them done so they will be fully cured in time.
A hint I forgot to share is how to clean the gloss off your hands. It is sticky and then dries and doesn't wash off easily with just soap and water. For a while I used the dispoable gloves, the very thin ones but now I clean up with a waterless hand sanitizer cleaner. You just squirt a little on your hands and rub together then rinse off. This is so much easier now.
I checked at Michaels here in Canada and they don't have any wood coasters. Does anyone know of a website with reasonable prices? Or have any suggestions of other stores that might have them?
Thank you, I love making them. I just looked back at the previous posts to see if anyone fould stores in Canada which sold the coasters. Another member asked but no one replied. The ones I buy are made by Kaiser Crafts Australia. They make scrapbook papers, wood album, boxes etc to decorate and also bling and half pearls with the adhesive backing. Maybe if one of you larger craft stores sell these they might be able to get in the coasters. http://www.kaisercraft.net/site/kais...raft-stockists
wood blanks products http://www.kaisercraft.net/site/kais...raft-stockists
Ok if I did this correctly this is a link to Kaiser crafts in the USA and Canada.
I had my DH cut them up for me from wood at the hardware store, I just haven't made anything yet. I did have a thought that you could get different shapes from one of the major craft stores out there, the shapes that you can paint and decorate, but haven't looked. Sorry I can not be more help.
I just went to Michael's and got mine. They are with the different wood things. They are just blanks. There were 2 different sizes. Mine were a little more expensive than I wanted, I think I paid .79 ea for them. I then went over to the mats and such and picked up self adhereing cork. I'm hoping that will work to put on the back.

Great, can't wait to see them, make sure you let us know when you upload them to your gallery.
Where are you getting your coasters, Misha? I've tried and tried online but couldn't and ended up getting the hardware store in our nearest town to get them in. Would lke to order online though but it seems I'd have to ask people to order them. I found some at The Warehouse on a holiday recently - dead cheap at 49c but they didn't have many.

I'm now all out of the coasters and need more :-O
I either buy mine at Spotlight or in Bunnings. I pay .49c each or here is a link to a local scrapbooking shop owned by my friend Debbie www.heavenscentcrafts.com.au
She doesn't have them listed online but if you emailed her she could send you some. I know she has them in stock and I am sure she is about the same price. Let me know how you go finding.
For the single coasters that I made for friends who I have met via my LSS I made pockets rather than wrapping them. I cut strips of vellum and scored and folded. I then pricked holes and used 2 strands of embriodery thread to sew them. Here are the pics of the coasters and the pockets
It just does it itself so long as you pour the liquid glass on slowly and carefully. It can spill over which is why you should elevate the coaster a bit (I use a tin) then if it does overflow then it will drip off and you can sand off and overhang without ruining the project.
Yes as metalcharm said take it slowly building out from the centre. it self levels so don't rush it. I take it very close to the edge but not all of the way, then I use my stirring stick to just slowly nudge it to the very edge that you finish with a lovely smooth rolled edge. Once it starts to drip over the edge it can be a bit hard to stop the flow so slow and steady is the best way.
