I just got a SU heat tool, and have tried using versamark with detail black powder on US vanilla with the Elegant Greetings set. I rubbed an unused Bounce cloth over the paper first. Around the image, there is a "smudge cloud." Do I really need to buy the embossing buddy? Has anyone tried using Static Guard on a cloth or something? I really want this to look sharp and clean.
It isn't static that's causing the ep to stick to your paper, it's most likely moisture from your hands. The only real solution that I've found is to use the embossing buddy when problems like this occur. Maybe someone else will have a different solution for you--that's just my experience so far. Welcome to the world of heat embossing! It's probablyl my favorite thing to do--I LOVE IT!!!
I know. I am new to embossing, too, and was told to use the dryer sheet
by my demonstrator. I got the same result you did. I wish I would have gotten the embossing buddy!

I like the embossing buddy best but when I can't find it in the creative mess  I use a Swiffer sheet. I think it cuts static better than my cheap-o dryer sheets. Swiffer sheets are also good for wiping the table down after using EP or Dazzling Diamonds glitter - really picks up tiny particles. I hear they're also good for cleaning the floor!
I purchased the embossing buddy last month and I hardly use it. I've never had a problem with excess EP. I just make sure that before I use my heat tool that the excess is removed either by turning the cardstock over and flicking it with my finger (like you would someone's ear!!!) or using a watercolor brush to remove any stubborn powder. It sounds like it takes a lot of time but it really doesn't. I don't really notice a difference when I use the embossing buddy. HTH
I have a few embossing buddies (and I still can't find one when I really need it!). They work great on light colored cardstock - glossy or matte. They are horrible on the darker colors, though!!! It sort of "dulls up" the card and leaves a kind of "film". I've also tried talc, baby powder and cornstarch. All work great, but have the same results as the buddy.
I found the thing that works the very best for me is a USED dryer sheet, and keeping my oily fingers only on very edges of the card, or keeping them on top of the dryer sheet when handling the card. The used dryer sheet works on all colors and types.
I have used my embossing buddy but I find I dont use it that often. I agree swiffer cloths are great and I have used the dollar general cheap
brand and have gotten good results. I think the dryer sheet is to thick and hard and doesnt really pick up things like the swiffer cloths.

I do the cornstarch in an "old" t-shirt. cut apart a old shirt and sewed it shut with the cornstarch inside. It works, but yes kind of dulls the darker cardstock, but it works.
If your embossing buddy dulls the CS (I've never noticed it), try giving the CS a rub with a Swiffer cloth after you emboss to remove the light powdery coating.
