Default Dyeing Ribbon

No matter how much ribbon I buy I never seem to have the right color for the project I'm working on. :(

Knowing that polyester is the most difficult to dye, have any of you tried dyeing your own ribbon with ink to match your stamping?

I use alcohol markers to color ribbon and seam binding. They're great for custom coloring!

Yes, I do, but so far I've only tried it with Distress Ink and Distress Reinkers. Somewhere I saw a video with someone putting a length of polyester seam binding in a plastic bag with a bit of reinker. She squished it all together and came out with an ombre looking ribbon. I loved that, tried it and it worked. I'm not sure if it would work as well on twill, but it does also work on silk.

If you're using alcohol markers, a few quick spritzes of rubbing alcohol will help colors blend together. It also stiffens the ribbon just a little, and helps it hold its form.

I just ordered a 25-ft roll of white ribbon from ebay. Can't wait to experiment!

You can 100 ft order rolls of seam binding in a wide wide color range on Zipper Stop. The brand everyone seems to be using is Hug Snug. I got a roll in black, cream, white and red. The red and black are just such intense colors it is almost impossible to get them with inkers. I have used the binding also for graduation banners spreading out the ribbon all over the place. I still have yards and yards left to do much more. Try on amazon.com also for good deals. Stamp Simply sells the binding by the 5 yd batch in a bunch of colors. Remember 5yds doesn't go too far. Sharon is awesome in dealing with, too. You may even get hooked on her site; she always arranges ribbon and paper and embellishments to match along with a good choice of dies.

I have Hug Snug in a few pale tones I tamper with, but I love the idea of intense black and red. I'm going to try them.
