Default Covering On Board Journals...

Could someone help me with covering the On Board Journals with Designer Paper. How do you completely cover the front (or back) with Designer paper...I'm totally confused how to cut around the spiral and holes. THANKS!!

The spirals can come off very easily. That is the best way I have found. You can also take the easy way out and cut the paper up to the spiral and then place a ribbon or twill tape along the edge to finish it off. I think it looks fine. Hope this helps.

Default Thanks so much Sandi!!!

I hadn't even thought about taking the spirals off, but it seems that would be the cleanest way to do it! thanks again!

I've recently been going nuts with spiral journals and photo albums --making my own covers. I've even gone as far as buying cheap journals from the $1 store, taking the spirals off, cutting my own chipboard to desired size, covering it with designer paper, punching holes in it and adding card stock cut to size and hole punched for pages. It makes a great little album for a gift. The only part that I have retained from the original $1 journal is the spiral (unless the cover is a size that I can use) but I haven't found a cheap source for buying just the spirals. I'm getting a great stash of scratch paper for grocery lists, etc. Some of the longer spirals can be cut down to make 2 albums. Have fun---the possibilities with this are endless.

I just today saw a new tool for punching the holes for spiral bindings.

It's on Ali Edwards blog.

Check it out on aliedwards.typepad.com. It's made by Berry Patch and looks like it would do a good job.

Sorry I don't know how to post a link.

HTH and enables!!! LOL

I have a question also about the journals. If you take out the wire comb, do you punch the holes in the designer paper and if so how do you do it. Do you take it to Kinko's or somewhere like that. I am trying to picture in my mind how you do something like this. I would like to make some for gifts. I do like the idea of putting the paper all the way to the comb and then putting ribbon or twill tape down at the edge.

I have minimal tools so I am sure that someone does it easier. If I'm doing the front cover, I cover the hole thing with paper. When it's dry I take my 1/8 hole punch and go along the holes in the cover. Then I take the extra paper and fold over the back end. Then I punch the holes again from the front. I'm not too good at spacing so I find it much easier to go over existing holes. I don't make enough to justify getting a larger machine for that purpose. Also the nearest Staples is 2 hrs away.

I've seen directions for these where you punch the holes in your paper then cut down to the holes. Glue the paper back together. I guess that is the lazy way out though.

Thanks for ideas. I bought some cheap spiral journals at Michael's. I don't have any punches the right size. I took the coil off, then cut the paper about 3/4 of an inch larger (on each of the 4 sides) - one piece for front and for the back. I placed the cover on the paper, and marked the inside of each hole with a pencil. I used my punch from and eyelet setter and hammered out the holes.
I used stampaholic's instructions for decorating.
