Altered clipboard help

hi girls,
O.K. , stupid question!! How does everyone get the designer paper under and around the clip at the top to fit correctly. Is there a trick to cutting around it ? Any help would be soooo.. appreciated. I just bought some mini, magnetic clip boards from target and am trying hard to get this right. Thanks girls, Mea

Here is what I did
First, I painted my clipboard in a color that coordinated/matched the paper that I was using to alter---so if mistakes showed--they might be less obvious

Then, I created a pattern using two pieces of oversized/legal sized copy paper. Copy paper is thin enough to work with that you can trace with almost no margin of error.
I fit the paper snug up on the clipboard trying to cover the entire thing--where the clip was--I took an exacto knife and carefully cut along one side to give the curved edge and opening...then I went to the other side and repeated the process in creating the pattern
When I was done--I took the pattern and folded it in half longways to see if both sides were pretty close to one another
That became my pattern.

Then, after I adhered the paper--if a particular spot required more 'help'--I considered the options of adding ribbon or other embellishments to 'hide' the imperfections

What about a photocopy of the clipboard itself as a template? That's how I do my tin purse tops.

I made a cardboard template for mine pretty much the same way scrapnva made hers ... but I 'allowed' about 2mm more on the outsides in order to cut it down and ink the edges if I went wrong !

I just slip my paper underneath the actual "clip" and center it on the clipboard, then I take a pencil and make two little marks where I would need to cut so that the paper goes around the stationary metal part. Clear as mud?
