Default TLC1003 Make An Impression 5/13/2024

Good Monday, everyone. I hope everyone in the US enjoyed a lovely Mother's Day yesterday.
Today's TLC is an easy one, maybe a bit 'erratic' but worth exploring. When we buy an art supply, the goal should be to use it often and in different ways. We are going to do stencil rubbings. To achieve a stencil rubbing, all you need is some thinner paper, a stencil and some kind of crayon, Crayola or art crayons or pastels. I can remember a time when doing rubbings of headstones in a cemetery was very popular. The paper should be relatively thin, like rice paper, copy paper, tracing paper, deli paper or similar. If your paper is too thick, you will not get a good impression. I tried all sorts of paper with different results but they all worked. I happen to have some oil pastels and those worked great. Crayons, like Crayola, work but the color isn't as vibrant. I love backgrounds so that is probably what I will use them for.
Put your stencil down first, maybe taped down so it doesn't move, place your paper on top and start rubbing. You can tear the paper of your crayon and use it sideways but I used mine just like I was coloring. It's very fun and therapeutic. Experiment with adding some color first to your paper, then do the rubbing. Most paper can handle some kind of wet media, like sprays for example. Then create with your rubbings; anything goes!!!!! Have fun!
There are a few videos that feature this technique; you don't necessarily need to watch them but you could glean some ideas. Here's one from Joggles. There are also some from Balzer Designs, Carolyn Dube and Shel C, which you could search for on YouTube

Here's a link to our Make An Impression gallery

I did three cards with three different substrates; I'll post them tomorrow.

Remember to use the keyword TLC1003 when you are uploading. It's helpful if you come back and leave a link on this thread, especially in case you made a typo and people may not find your card.

If you're not sure how to link your card on the thread here, here's how:

1. Open 2 windows or tabs: one window for your card and one for this thread.
2. In this thread, click on reply and type anything you want to show before the link.
3. Go to your card window. Highlight the address for your card. (It says www.splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/showphoto..... and so on)
4. Click EDIT. Click COPY
5. Go back to this thread. Click PASTE.

I made 6 backgrounds, two I don't like, two were fine and two I really liked. The one on the sunflower card reminds me of the look I get with stencils on a gel plate. Unlike Jean, I didn't like how my oil pastels came out, those are the two I likely won't use! I also used chdlk pastels and Crayola crayons.

Finally, here are my three cards. I was all set to upload them last night but then I decided to show the stencils in the photos and I ran out of gas.Three different substrates all with oil pastels, Pentel and cheap ones from Dollar Tree. I see that Anita says she couldn't stop. You all know I like to create backgrounds and figure out ways to use them so I totally understand what she said. I have more backgrounds and I can see myself doing this often.

Here is mine which I combined with the MMTPT challenge today.

I also ran my impression through my big shot with the stencil which did some very light embossing - I think I will do that in the future and use the lines to paint something.

Thanks, Jean, for reminding us of this fun technique! I made several backgrounds using transfer paper and chalk (soft) pastels. Here is one card I made (will save the other backgrounds for later): Ethereal Butterfly
