Default Questions regarding new ads and Google ads

First, let me say that I am so happy that the new ads on Splitcoast are not the obnoxious kind that appear on so many websites.

I do have a question. Are the new ads for other companies, such as Amuse Stamps, paid for totally by that company? Or does Splitcoast receive a small payment each time we click on their banner? Or does Splitcoast receive a reward only when we follow through and purchase from the other company?

Similar questions in regard to the Google ads. Does Splitcoast receive a small payment each time we click on an ad? Or does Splitcoast receive a reward only when we follow through and purchase from a Google advertiser?

Because this might actually have an effect on the finances of Splitcoast, it might serve you well to post this information on the home page or in the Weekly Inkling.

great questions, thanks for asking. We've got a home-page article put together that will answer these and other questions; it'll be posted soon. advertising is an important issue - it has implications for the community and also for the business of the site.

here's some quick answers (okay, not so quick after all!). the new ads are paid for totally by those companies, yes. right now we're doing just flat rates for daily or weekly placements, not on a pay-per-click or other system. there are lots of ways that online advertising is conducted, for simplicity's sake we're doing flat rate pricing, but we may change later if it makes more sense for us or our advertisers.

google ads are largely pay-per-click. that is, advertisers don't pay to *display* the ads, but they pay each time someone clicks. google has other options now, but the bulk of their ads are pay-per-click.

one nice thing about working directly with advertisers as we're doing now - we can feel free to talk about the companies or their products, and encourage you to click through and give them a look. that isn't possible with google because it would violate their terms of service. since google advertisers pay every time you click, they would be paying for visits from people who aren't really interested customers - but just clicking through in order to benefit SCS.

again, thanks for the questions. look for the article on the home page in the next few days.

Thank you! I might actually click on the Google ads once in awhile, now that I know it helps....

I've been wondering this too - so thanks for asking. Just for good measure I clicked on all the google ads and there actually was some cool stuff on the sites advertised.

When I first found SCS I thought it was a site for fun (i.e. hobby) but now I see all the work that goes in to running it and it really looks like a full time business.... How do you keep it running if you are working a full time job also????? Where do you find the energy!!!
