Order of Images in Gallery?

What is the default order of images in the gallery? Is there a way to provide options for how to sort the gallery - similar to how many images to display on each page - options like by date, last comment, number of views, number of comments, etc. (OK, by date is the one I'm really interested in, but I know for looking at my own gallery, sometimes I wish I could see the others.)

at the bottom of each gallery is a sort feature. You can't make it default for your user id, so you have to change each time.

Generally, galleries are sorted to show most recent upload first.

Ack, *blush* I never thought to look at the bottom.

The gallery I was looking at, I couldn't tell what it was sorting by, but it wasn't recent upload - those dates were all over the place.

OK, so it seems the other galleries do sort by upload...but Serene Sunflower isn't:

The Reason to Smile gallery seems to be sorting by most recent comment (as the default), not by upload date.
