I have found that pigment ink (or craft ink as SU calls it) shows up better on dark paper. It's thicker than dye ink, so it doesn't soak in so much. Also, embossing with lighter colors on dark paper really stands out.

versamark and pearl ex were made to be used with dark papers. if you have the interference kind it's even more dazzling. gel pens are great for filling in colors after embossing with white or metallics.
