I was trying to print out the 50% Michael's coupon and my printer won't print. If there is any color cartridge that is out of ink, just one and it won't print. I even had it on grey scale, since the coupon is black and white. Nope.
Well, to print the coupon I had to buy more ink...so I took the old refillable cartridges in Office Max. Sorry, we don't refill Canon. Just HP and Lexmark.
So, I spend $48 on ink to come home to print my coupon so I can search Michael's for an hour to find something NOT on sale and NOT on the CAN NOT USE COUPON ON THESE ITEMS list. Maybe I'll find something for $10 so I can save $5.
I agree. Those coupons drive me nuts because I feel obligated to go to Michael's and shop. This time I gave the coupons away as I didn't see anything that had to come home with me.
May I suggest looking around for a Cartidge World? That's where I fill all my printer cartridges. The guy at mine has also given me invaluable information about inks and printers. Like which cartidges have more ink in them and bang for the buck.
Too funny. And FYI, if you have a Staples near you, they do take Cannon cartridges for recycling and you'll get a credit eventually online to print out and redeam in the store.
Other than Staples, the other office supply stores do carry their own brand of ink cartridges for most printers. Much cheaper than the name brand ones and they work just as well.
I agree with others, you would need to replace the cartridge anyway, so it's no issue.
I know what you mean about the coupons. I've forced myself to not feel like I HAVE to spend money because I have a coupon. I went in one time with a coupon and walked around for about 1/2 hour just looking for something to spend money on because I either had what I saw on the shelves or I knew I absolutely wouldn't use it. I left the store with nothing...
Oh, and I never run out of ink anymore. I installed a continuous ink supply system on my printer. I have enough ink to last me at least a year...
I can't even tell you how many times I am in Michael's or Hobby Lobby and find nothing I want or need and I give the coupon to someone. They get so excited. Last time it was 2 High School aged girls and they were thrilled.
Just thought I would let you all know what my husband did to my printer. He bought me something called ink tanks and I never have to worry about buying ink cartridges again.
He installed the ink tank to my printer and now all we need to do is to buy the large ink bottles (which are cheap) and refill the tanks when they get low. Now and I can print out whatever I want and I don't have to worry about the cost of my ink. I've had my ink tanks for at least a year, maybe longer and I love them!
I think my husband purchased it on ebay and the refills he just bought there as well. So far we have only had to refill 1 tank!
Oops....as I'm typing this I see that Cat (above) posted about this system as well.
my wish....that stores would allow you to "show" them the email from your phone and they will honor a coupon that way. kwim?
We have alot of "peets" coffee stores where I live and I get email coupons that you can print OR just show the clerk your smart phone with the emailed coupon and they will honor that. I think its the green way to go.
btw I know what others are saying, once I cut that coupon out and have it in my purse, its burning a hole until I find a reason to use it and I usually do even if its for something small LoL
I have to agree with the two people above who have posted about CIS- Continuous Ink Systems. We have been buying them for every printer we have had for about 7 years now- I would never go back to having to buy cartridges. When we need a new printer, whether or not there is a CIS available for it is a decider for buying. The ink quality is fine, in fact better than you get in some compatibles, and you never run out!
So...do these continuous ink systems exist for Epson printers? I usually buy my ink directly from Epson (they are typically $2-3 cheaper than in a retail establishment and usually shipping is free) but it would be so nice to have a CIS system.

I can relate. I think my worst example is the time I bought ONE Studio G clear stamp, $1, and used my coupon for it. I felt terribly wasteful, too.

They do have them for Epson printers

I bought mine from this ebay seller, but not through ebay Shop eBay Canada Store - Ink Deals USA:: For Epson, CISS FOR EPSON. It was a fairly good deal for my printer and they will combine shipping if you are purchasing more than one item (so it ends up being a couple $ cheaper). I also didn't have to pay any duties or brokerage fees, so that was nice. Its a crap shoot though on the duties, but it was under $100 so those packages are usually not picked.
All the companies I found in Canada were quite a bit more expensive and with the dollar pretty much at par, it was still cheaper to order from the US.

HL will. M won't. At least here in my town.

I joined Michaels Rewards and they just load the coupon onto my card now, so i don't have to print them, remember them, I just have to remember my rewards card(which is on a huge ring in my car, with everyother store in the world's card)
I printed a JoAnn's coupon off, grabbed it from the printer tray and headed out. When I got to the checkout register my discount was only going to be a few dollars with the coupon, but a dollar is a dollar, so I was happy. The gal said I'm sorry you can't use this coupon because there is no bar code on the bottom of the coupon. Stunned, I said you sent me the coupon in my e-mail and I printed it off with my printer and ink and now you are telling me because your coupon didn't print correctly I can't use it????? Yep. That's correct. I said, you know what, cancel my purchase and walked out of the store. I normally shopped several times a month in that store. This happened last spring and I have been there two times since, once to buy a zipper and once to buy glue dots, that were on sale, plus I had a coupon. My husband said I wish more stores would send you coupons that don't print correctly.

I had the same thing happen to me. BUT, I was lucky. I had a copy of their flier with another 40% off coupon on the back. Well, my cashier scanned the bar code on the flier and told me to keep that one for next time.

In a crazy way, it makes sense. You would have to replace the ink cartridges anyway, right?
Yes, I would be replacing the cartridges anyway, but I usually refill at Costco for $7.99 ea. Had I not "needed" the coupon for Michael's "right now", I would have waited and saved money.
My husband thinks we (crafters) are all crazy anyway. He just rolls his eyes when I come home with a bag full of stamps that I "saved" money buying because they were on sale.
I get email coupons from a local craft store here in Sydney. The emails always say 'please consider the environment before printing this email', but they will only accept a print out of the coupon - duh!
P.S. Thank you for letting me know about CISS. I can't believe I haven't heard of this before. I live in Australia, and I found a supplier for my old printer, not far from where I live. So, I will spend the money on CISS, and save money on printer cartridges!
That happened to me too, that I cut and pasted the coupon I wanted to wordpad and the barcode didn't print. I do that when I get that whole string of coupons and I only really want the one and I am terribly aware of how much it cost to get new ink cartridges. The lady was so nice, she used the barcode from a flyer she had. That CIS sounds interesting. I'll be looking into it,too.
I don't have a printer so I downloaded a free program called "Primo PDF" which allows me to print a PDF file of the page I want. If the email is three pages, I "PDF" print the page I want. I save the PDF file to a flash drive, take it to Office Max and they print the page for me at a cost of eleven cents. Fortunately, my Office Max is close to home.
Whats this? Is this a new thing Michaels is doing? I haven't been in there in a while.

Coo, I'll have to look into it. Although M's doesn't carry all the latest and greatest nor hardly anything I use but still great to have if their are school supplies etc.

I had a printer like that and I hated the waste and expense. I ended up getting an old printer on e-bay...can't remember the brand, but it was the type of printer that I could get ink online for $2.00 black and $3.00 colored. Was that old clunky printer a dream!
I was teaching kindergarten at that time and could print out all kinds of banners for the hallway and bulletin boards for virtually free!

I need to to check that out. My new HP printer goes thru ink so quickly compared to my old one.
Now after reading this thread it looks like I will be spending money on a CIS to save money!
On the multiple coupons - normally you can copy a picture by right clicking and then paste and print in Word. I do this all the time to only print coupons I want or multiples for family who will be shopping with me.
And I'm happy not to find anything and give my coupon away. I have met some lovely and very grateful crafters that way!

They do that here...in fact, I have an app on my iPhone for JoAnn's. I will never have to clip a coupon again. I load the current coupons into my "wallet" on the phone and show the gal at the register. She inputs a code and done. Mikes honors all of the app coupons, too. My iPhone is actually saving me money!! HA!

Like I said, I love my ink tanks (as I call them) or the CIS- best money ever spent on computer stuff.
I wanted to say that I also give my coupons away if I end up not using them- it's nice to help make someone's day. One time I did that in Ulta and my coupon ended up saving someone else $20, she couldn't thank me enough. I gave it to her because I saw that she has an expensive item in her hand and my coupon was for 20% off.

Funny you are talking about this... I was at M's last night and asked if they took an internet printed coupon (just wanted to make sure) and the girl told me yes as long as it was printed out. I asked if that meant they couldn't use the ones on the smartphones and she said that No, they had to have the printed copy to prove the coupon in the register. Probably just my Mike's not keeping up with the technology yet!
