AUG09VSNPOT4~Friday, July 17, 2009~9PM EDT~"Sodium Reduced Soup"
Title: "Sodium Reduced Soup"
Hostess: Astrid ~laughingLARGE~

As a child, I was a salt-a-holic.I would add salt to virtually every dish on the table, except dessert ;). Now, as I am getting older (and hopefully wiser), Im realizing the foolishness of my ways. More and more of my relatives are going on medication for high blood pressure. So, I am trying to be more proactive in reducing the sodium in our diet, primarily by avoiding as much processed food as I can and also by using herbs and spices instead of salt during food preparation.
One of the dishes I love to make is soup, and I'm learning how to create it with less salt.
Thank goodness we have no such restrictions when making cards!! My challenge is.use the salted background technique to create a background for your card. There are only a couple of rules: make the salted paper the largest piece of your card (of course you may cover it, stamp it, embellish it, etc.), and state which colours you used to create your salted background.
Here is a tutorial on how to create a salted background.
As I played with this technique, I discovered a handful of things. First, have all your supplies out before you startthis is a technique where it doesnt have to be perfect, but you do want to be fast. In a nutshell, take a piece of glossy white cardstock. Spray with water, and then quickly colour using an Aquapainter or paintbrush with water-based ink in whatever fashion you choose, but do try to cover the entire piece of paper. Both reinkers and ink on the lid work just finethe reinkers are just a little bolder in their colour. Then add either fine or course salt while the whole works are still wet. Spritz with more water to blend the colours, and then use a heat gun to dry. Brush off the salt and your paper is ready.
My sample is shown below.
Have fun adding salt to your card!
UPLOADING INSTRUCTIONS:
1. ALL VSN CREATIONS MUST BE UPLOADED BY 10:00 PM EDT ON SUNDAY, JULY 19th
2. You have 45 minutes to complete the challenge.
3. Please remember to put in the correct keyword (AUG09VSNPOT4) when uploading your image. Copying and pasting the challenge keyword is recommended to avoid typos.
It is also highly recommended that you post a link to your creation in the chat thread just in case the gallery is being testy.
Hello everyone!! Thank goodness I just ate, otherwise I'd be a lot hungrier with all this VSN food talk going on. It's my first time hostessing and I'm thrilled to be here.

One of my favourite things about VSN is trying new techniques....being forced outside my "regular" box. And truth be told, the 45 minute time limit really helps me because I know that my success or failure won't be long lasting, but the learning that I do is!

Astrid, I'd like to thank you for really pushing me on this one. I'd tried this technique a couple of weeks ago using reinkers and an aquapainter - couldn't get the background right.
So, this time around, I tried the blender pens and ink from an inkpad - that didn't work either. I was so frustrated. So instead, for this card, I spritzed my glossy white with some water, dropped my reinkers directly onto the cardstock, hit it with the spritzer again, added my salt, one last hit with the spritzer and then dried it using my heat gun. That worked much better!!!!!
So, again, thank you for pushing me to do something that I could have very easily given up on!!!!! Here's my sample card:

That's my favourite thing about VSN too. I've tried things I wouldn't normally try just in the name of VSN!
I'm also looking forward to seeing the colour combo's people come up with, because I think that was one of the hardest things for me - which colours do I choose? You don't want it to end up in a big muddy mess!!!!!

First off, Hello Astrid!
Second, great technique, just in from having a family weiner roast...but have a couple of the challenges whirling around in my head...have wanted to try this, but haven't yet, so love the challenge...
and agree with your rather profund statement of why you love VSN's with the time limit and success or failure not lasting long!
Thirdly, who is this miracle worker Cav from down under that gets a card up in 11 minutes! yikes...that is success in a big way!
Off to put kids to bed...

Gena, use lots of water in the spritzing, and have everything ready to go. Spritz the paper first, get the ink on ASAP, spritz some more, throw on the salt, and spritz even more if you need to. Hope it goes better this time.

Cav got it up because she's a hostess like me, which means we all got a sneak peek at each other's work. No, we're not miracle workers!! I'm sure she used her 45 minutes, just before the challenge officially started.
Oh, and I forgot to mention, you know that the technique is working when you throw the salt on, the colours change right away.

Had some trouble with this technique but like what I'm starting to see. I'll have to keep trying this until I get it right. Like any good Chef it may take a few times of making a dish to get it right.
Yes, it is quiet. I'm guessing that they're all busy throwing extra salt on their cards. Keep everything nice and wet, with as much ink as you can on the card before throwing the salt on. You should be able to immediately see the salt working.
The cards in the gallery so far are all really cool.
