What happened to Scrapbooking and Stamping on DIY?
I tuned in when we finally got this channel and it is all home improvement. There used to be all sorts of scrapbooking shows and stamping on Carol Duval and such. What happened?
Are there any shows on TV anymore that have stamping or scrapbooking? I am so bummed!
Nope, I think the only craft shows are on HGTV, they run at 6:30 and 8 am Eastern. Different series every day, so unless you memorize the grid, you have no idea what will be on.
I've been writing both DIY and HGTV complaining since they took the shows off about a year ago, nothing has changed.
I think the problem is that the manufacturers of craft goods don't want to pay to sponsor the shows. That's what led to TV Weekly, which had Scrapbook Lounge and Plum and Verdigris (jewelry) shows online. They announced a couple of weeks ago that they were no longer hosting shows due to lack of income.
Hate to say it, but companies seem to be advertising through blogs and design teams rather than by sponsoring TV programming.
I have the Dish Network. DIY Scrapbooking is on at 5:30 a.m., I think, a few days a week. It's also on HGTV at that time. I record it with my DVR. Scrapbook Memories is on BYU at 2:00 p.m. on weekdays and 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Scrapbook Memories is more up-to-date, as DIY Scrapbooking ended in 2005.
I miss the craft programs too. Am getting disgusted with Dish Network as they preview new channels with interesting programs then if you buy it they have a lot of reruns and old junk and home improvements. My Dish was supposed to cost $49.99 wwhen we got it so I wasn't surprised at a $60 bill with taxes etc. Last month it was $71 + and we haven't added anything new. It seems I have to call every month and fight about increases in various things they add. I wish they had a cafeteria plan so we wouldn't have to take so many channels we have no use for and could get a few more that we would like to have. I understand that they have to have a package of some sort to pay for the service but of 200 channels we actually only watch about 15.
Sadly, we don't get this channel. What is the full name of it? Maybe it's an only satellite thing? I have cable through Comcast.
It's was originally on PBS and now BYU replays them. It's called Scrapbook Memories and you can see projects (but not whole episodes) on www.scrapbookmemoriestv.com

Jen, do you mean TV Weekly (Scrapbook Lounge and Plum & Verdigris) is closing down due to lack of income (sponsorship)?

I keep my DVR set for Scrapbook, Carol Duvall & Knitty Gritty. The have resurfaced lately. I have Verizon Fios. I wish they would keep us crafters in mind. There are way too many decorating, gardening, improving, selling or buying a home shows.

Yes, it is.

Dear TVWeekly Family,
Thank you for the many wonderful comments about how much you have enjoyed
TVWeekly.com and CraftTVWeekly before that. I have been involved in the
production of
this television show that airs on your computer every week since before we went
on the air
in November, 2005.
Having worked on the The Carol Duvall Show when HGTV shut down production,
(let's not
even get started on that) I understand your frustration in feeling that the
"Producers" don't
see the value of demonstration-style crafting shows for television and/or the
internet. I
am one of the Producers and that just isn't the case here.
Many have commented that it's too bad the TVWeekly Producers have decided to
stop
producing this fine show because they don't believe that there is money to be
made in
crafting. Others have offered to pay a small monthly or annual fee to keep the
show on the
air.
Here are the facts:
TVWeekly is television quality programming and it costs thousands of dollars to
produce a
single Episode. The TVWeekly staff and volunteers work hard to provide high
quality
programming and won't lower their standards. When TVWeekly (then known as
CraftTVWeekly) launched in late 2005, we were user supported. We were not able
to
secure enough users to stay on the air, so we converted to sponsor-based
programming.
Because of our economic climate, it is becoming more and more difficult for many
sponsors to continue to pay for our shows. Many manufacturers have been
approached to
sponsor our shows and have refused. They don't think it is a wise use of their
marketing
funds or they choose to create their own videos for their websites. The reality
is, without
sufficient funds, we can't continue to produce shows. And to go back to
user-supported
programming would be cost-prohibitive to the average viewer/member. If 2,000
viewers
were willing to pay, it would cost each of them about $275 per year for weekly
Episodes
and we would need annual, non-refundable commitments in order to follow that
path.
Many people ask, "Can't it be done more cheaply?" The answer is, yes. With video
cameras
and editing software so readily available, anyone can make and post a video.
Over the last
year or two, thousands of homemade craft videos have popped up all over video
sites like
YouTube.
So, yes. It can be done much more cheaply. We could grab our nephew's camera and
shoot
in our neighbor's big kitchen, but that's not what TVWeekly is nor is it what
you expect
when you tune in.
Please know that our entire production team is still passionate about our
product—the
episodes on TVWeekly.com. No one believes in these shows more than we do. During
the
leanest times, tens of thousands of man-hours have been donated by my production
team, including Mickey, me, Ron, and ALL of our Designers, just to keep us on
the air.
But the bottom line is, until someone here hits the lottery, we are completely
dependent
on advertising dollars. And those dollars are becoming harder and harder to
find.
Fortunately, these 177 Episodes are going to live forever online and on DVD.
They will
always be an inspiration to us. We so enjoyed bringing them to you.
It makes me so sad. Simple Scrapbooks is ceasing publication, too and that was announced the other day . . .
Two years ago, some of my industry friends and I were talking, and we wondered how long it would take before what we could see coming down the pike would hit . . .
Very sad, indeed.

When will Simple Scrapbooks stop? I have a subscription - will I be out $$??
I too have been missing these - even watching a rerun for the third (or more) time! I just did a search on DishNetwork - there are some shows scheduled at 3:30 and 4:30 a.m. our time. Our recording is problematic - maybe we will get the new HDDVR receiver and that might help.
optotecha, your Simple subscription will end in April and any remaining issues will come to you in the form of Creating Keepsakes. CK will incorporate Simple into it again, like it was eight years ago, at the very beginning. If you have any questions or concerns, go to the SIple blog and get the contact info. You can email or call them.

So what is it that you saw coming? The advent of vendors sponsoring just their own little viral advertising teams? Oversaturation of the craft market in general?
Ohno! Simple is my very favorite SB'ing magazine!!! And their Simple publications (special ones) are AWESOME! Why are they stopping?? Ohmygoodness - this is BAD!! I've subbed for years and I haven't made a SB page since I started stamping - but I'm GOING TO and I NEED Simple Scrapbooks Magazine!!!
So Julie, what did you see coming? Please let us know!! Obviously the stamping/scrapping industry itself is doing great, right??

In part, yes.

Evidently it will be reincorporated back into a "feature" of Creating Keepsakes, as it originally was. It does not receive enough advertising revenue to remain a separate publication.
This is the 2nd CK publication to announce it is shutting down--earlier they announced Digital Scrapbooking was shutting down . . .

Sadly, brick & mortar stores are vanishing . . . some of the major industry players we are familiar with are filing for bankruptcy, and some have been bought by even larger corporations . . . smaller companies are being consolidated into larger ones, too . . . industry related magazines that we know and love are ceasing publication, due to lack of advertising revenue . . .
And, if you look at Google Trend reports, you see a continuing and steady downward trend.

Here in MO and where I lived in Central IL, Scrapbook Memories is broadcast on the public television channel. In Il I got it on Thursdays, here in MO it's on Sat. mornings.
Go to your local PBS website for scheduling.

i noticed a few months back that my grocery store no longer carried any paper crafting magazines. i looked at the library, and they used to have a section for simple scrapbooks and others, but not anymore. they still have a spot for "paper crafts"

I moved to the middle of nowhere in 07. Our tiny grocery store seemed to carry every mag except scrapping mags. I asked the manager one day when the vendor comes in and why I was asking. 2 weeks later I had Scrapbooks Ect (or maybe simple scrapbooks) on the shelf. :-) Ask the manager. It can't hurt.

dish network has scrapbook memories on channel 9403, create tv has paint, paper and crafts monday and fridays at 5pm. they also show various painting and crafting shows. our create is published by pbs.
I was reading the posts about the lack of our favorite craft shows on TV. Went online to crafttvweekly and clicked on the Scrapbook Lounge for videos and it took me to Google videos. Looks like they have taken down the site. GREAT!!:( As I had many of their videos archived as Favorites in my account. This is SO sad. I too have often wondered when we would reach the peak especially with traditional scrapbooking. One of our LSS went out of business and I couldn't help but think it may be due to the fact of the ever growing popularity of digi scrapbooking...which I am a fan of to a degree. I still like to use my hands and do trad. scrapbooking. Guess I am a hybrid scrapper. Just wonder if anyone had had some of these thoughts as well. Love this site and enjoy the forums. Happy Crafting all!!!
I'm so glad I stumbled across this thread. I had been a fan of TVWeekly.com and CraftTVWeekly and had been unable to "get through". When I tried their website, all I got was a screen that said the site was down. I, too, had it bookmarked and watched it regularly. I'll sure miss it. We have Comcast and I don't ever see any craft or scrapbooking shows available. Our LSS said they were going to close if the economy didn't improve.

I complained to DYI.com and they didn't even respond to my email...and I was nice about it. All I asked was where did the "fun" crafting shows go???
It comes down to lack of revenue. It takes a lot of money to produce a television show, or print publication or a website. No money = no show (publication or website).

as for hgtv, i have noticed that they tend to change the lineup seasonally, too, so it's possible that what isn't running right now, might show up a couple months from now, too. they have less gardening and more home improvement during the winter, for example...

Nah, the shows have been off for at least a year now. I don't really think they'll be back.
THANK YOU Stampin Granny...I never heard of TVWeekly.com. I registered and also sent the info to two other three other scraping friends of mine! If you know of any other sites - just key me in. LOL. I have found some nice sites on YouTube.com also. Thanks, Con.

I had to google to find out where Craft Tv/TV Weekly went! I was heart broken to find they are ceasing production. But, I understand. I have noticed that the paper crafts industry has cut back a lot! I live in Central FLA and one of the EXPOs has been cancelled. We used to have 3-4 per year and I only see 1 scheduled plus the consumer CHA in July. HSN and QVC haven't had their all day long paper crafting fairs either. Sign of the times, I guess. But this hobby is what gets me through these times. I better start hoarding my supplies...lol!

I've been watching Scrapbook Memories on BYU, they are all reruns now. Sandi Genovese has a "Scrapbook Showgram on //scrapbookshowgram.com. She is the host that did the DIY Scrapbook show, I just watch alot of youtubers on papercrafting for my paper fixes. I too wrote to DIY about the lack of craft shows, it's a shame, I really enjoyed them. Thanks, Marianne
