I am curious. Based on what I see in the scrapbook stores, 99% of scrappers copy layouts. I was wondering to what extent:
1. copy an entire layout, using the same paper
2. copy an entire layout, use different paper
3. copy parts of the layout so that the layout isn't even recognizable after you have created it
4. sit down with supplies and just create your own layout
I make new layouts from scratch every time because so many of the LO I see in magazines have either only a few photos, or pix that are enlarged beyond 4x6.
I'd love to be able to copy colour schemes directly from a mag., but I choose colours based on those in the pix I am scrapping, and by referring to my colour wheel.
I'm a blend between #3 and #4... I mostly make up my own, but sometimes I heavily modify an existing idea (usually beyond recognition... I just use it as a jumping off point). However, I really am not a typical scrapper - none of my pages have pictures!! I just make them to show my customers how cute and easy scrapbooking can be... but I don't have any actual pictures to put in them (no kids, travel, etc). Can't wait until I have kids- my scrapbooks will be so much cuter with them in it!!!
I'm also a blend between 3 and 4....I look at magazines for inspirarion, take a basic layout and modify it so that it fits supplies I have and photos, I also pull colors from photos, and use color wheel, and what ever pops up the page,...Idon't think I have every copied completey..layout, paper etc...more than likely use the page theme, color combo or basic layout of title, or embellishments, or techniques
It depends on my mood when I'm scrapping. If I'm feeling pretty upbeat and creative I will go where the wind takes me. If I'm not, or if I'm going to a power crop, I will look at my pics then go through my idea books for layouts (will use different colors, embellishments, etc, but use the layout as a basic template). That usually helps me get the creative juices flowing enough that I can go with the flow and move onto my own ideas.
I think I do more of my own creating with scrapbooking & more casing with cards. It just seems that when I look at my pics & the colors I want to pull out that I end up not really using any of the ideas of seen, but coming up with my own that works with my pics.
Definately create my own scrapbook pages. Funny because I case most of my cards which doesn't make sense. I'm a very big journalist. Lately I have been doing the journaling on the opening page(sometimes as much as a double page) of a layout and then letting the photos and embelishments speak for themselves. I am different from alot of people because I am more into preserving my photos and family history than scrapbook type stuff so I don't put anything on my pages that can't fit under my page protectors. I use alot of embellishments, stickers and stamps I'm just not comfortable with things on the page that can be opened up and pulled out.

I like to copy Becky Higgins' sketches in her layout book because I always use about 10 pictures in a layout. Otherwise, the paper and embellishments are always my ideas.
I think I've done 2, 3, and 4. I've never yet copied completely. It's not that I wouldn't, it's just that I've never had an occasion to have the same exact supplies, etc. Scrap pages are so much more complex than cards, or can be, so it is rare that you have the exact same paper as one you are trying to work from. But I do copy Higgins' layouts often and get inspired by ideas like how some silk flowers are worked across the page or any number of little things. Usually, you couldn't tell the original from mine cause even when casing mine are often a combination of what I have seen in several different layouts.
I create my own pages but love to look thru magazines but I never ever have the same size pictures or the amount of pictures they have. Also if I had all the supplies in the magazines which I want, I would be RICH. But when it comes to my cards I find I look at samples here and pick and chose parts I like to use for my cards.
I just follow in the footsteps of my idol mama k
she comes up with some great ideas for the scrapbook sketch challenges. The past 5 layouts I have done with her challenge are my favorites in my book by far.

I enjoy looking at various styles from sb mags. My own style will emerge, depending on my mood and the photos. Creating cards evolved from my sb passion, and has taken over for now!
I do it from scratch, I copy layout style or maybe there was one title, technique or element that caught my eye that I will recreate. Usually go the scrapbook style book I have created when I am feeling uninspired, it starts my juices flowing. I have taken and cut up my scrapbook magazines keeping only those things that I truly want to try myself, I have categorized them in a binder and really consider it my "scrapbook bible".
I totally do my own thing ~ have never copied from a magazine or used a sketch for that matter .... just find them too limiting... I have more of a CM style and crop, layout and then embellish!

I find that Becky Higgins' book, Sketches, is awesome for inspiration. I must subscribe to 3 or 4 different scrapping magazines but I always refer to her book when push comes to shove.
