I am getting so frustrated with my Fiskars paper trimmer. The edges of my paper look frayed when I cut with it. I tried 2 sets of new blades and am still having the same problem. Maybe I just need to get a new paper trimmer.
Which ones do you ladies use and recommend? Which have you had problems with and would NOT recommend??
TIA for any help!(I love how you can ask any question here and people are always willing to share helpful experiences and opinions. Aren't SCS awesome?!!)
I adore my Tonic paper cutter. I bought it through JoAnn's online, when I found myself very frustrated with my old Fiskars paper trimmer. I feel your frustration.
I like rotary trimmers and really like the Making Memories one. I get nice good cuts and it folds. You can use a coupon on it at M's or a similar store.

before you look at a new trimmer, have you replaced the cutting strip? I found that it needed replacing almost sooner than my blades.... depending on which trimmer you have, it's a black plastic strip that runs the length of the trimmer....
HATE my MM trimmer that I got at M's with a coupon. The edges are frayed no matter what tricks and tips I try. I need to take it back but what a hassle. Supposedly this is not a totally uncommon problem.
I've given my little fiskers one away and only use my Tonic. I have the one that has the 6" base and I love that it doesn't take up much space at all. If I have alot of big cutting to do I still have my Large fiskers rotary tabletop model and it's ok, just big.
I think I have 5 cutters and like them all for different things! I have both cutters that SU sells. I like the tonic for speed when I'm prep'ing for a class. I like the Fiskers SU sells, I think it is the triple track. I love it for precision--when I need 1/16 th of an inch I can get it! I also like the scoring blade on it--I have the cutting blade at the top the scoring blade at the bottom (it easily pops off when I'm cutting 12" paper).
I have the little photo trimmer from CM--I bought it at a retreat. It is basically worthless to me as I use 5x7 photos--it is just too small.
I also have a Carl Cutter that must be defective! I can not cut an 8 1/2 by 11inch sheet of paper equally in half to save me!
I have an old cutter (at least 20 years old) that is just wore out. I would love one like it but they are no longer in business.
There you have it--more info on cutters than anyone should need!
I have the cutting blade at the top the scoring blade at the bottom (it easily pops off when I'm cutting 12" paper).
What a great idea! All these years I've been switching blades...what a pain!! If you use a Fiskars-type cutter, make sure it's triple track. You'll get straight cuts that way vs. something that's 1/16-1/8" off from the top of the cut to the bottom.
I use the SU Fiskars for everyday cutting and my big Carl cutter when I'm prepping for classes/workshops or need to cut a lot of paper (my Carl can cut multiple - as in maybe 10+ - pieces of cardstock at one time).

Is it the fiskars cutter with a cutting mat. I have discovered that you need to change the mat frequently. It it is all cut up you won't get a good cut.

can someone explain what a "triple track" is? I have a Fiskars cutter and hate it so I was very excited to see this thread, but I have no idea what most of the brands that are being mentioned are! I am hoping to get one at M's with the new 50% COUPON... I know they have Fiskars but not sure about the triple track part. I would love to be able to cut a piece of paper in half and have it straight and even!!!
I have a purple cow trimmer. I've had it over a year. It works great. It's consistent. It's kinda bulky though but, it makes clean cuts. One slide has a slide cutter the other one is a guillotine.
ok...let's see if I can explain! With the non-triple-track Fiskars, the blade just pops in and when you try to wiggle it, there's a fair amount of play and it moves around a bit. This is why you can get a cut that's not exactly straight. With triple track, the blade pops in in a similar way, but the plastic part that houses the blade actually has two little "hooks" that stick out (one on each side) and these hooks fit into two extra grooves that are on either side of the cutting channel. This design holds the blade in place a lot better than the old design. Did I get that right, ladies?

I totally agree, my trimmer came to about $30 with a coupon and I LOVE IT!!!!! Plus they have AMAZING customer service so if anything goes wrong with it they will replace with no hassle! Awesome awesome awesome!!

Your blade does not sound like it is lined up correctly. There was a post on here once about taking the blade off but I would contact MM they will send you a new one if its broken. When its working you will love it!!

That sounds exactly what is happening to me. Thanks for the explanation!
I use the Carl RT200 12" and absolutely love it. I do change the cutting track more than the blade. I can always tell when its time to change it because the edges look frayed. I have recently purchased the scoring blade for my Carl and wonder why I didn't get one sooner DUH. Love it. I also have 2 fiskars one 12" got is when a local dept store was going out of business for real cheap. Then a 81/2" that I purchased shortly after I started making cards (before becoming a demo) like these for trim work or cutting 1 sheet. Good luck
I had a fiskars and hated it, never a crisp cut, whether replacing the blade or mat; however, I was not aware of a triple cutting mat. I purchased the new making memories folding 12 x 12" paper cutter with all the great card markings on it and love it; it folds in half to save space and i used a coupon on it for 40% off i also have an old school type quillitone cutter and you can never go wrong with them, but don't have any markings on it for size of card to cut

Creative Memories IS THE BEST. I've used the same one for 10 years and about 10,000 cards later (literally) and I've never sharpened the blade and NEVER had frayed paper edges!
(I don't sell for Creative Memories but I should------------their cutter is awesome!!!)
I have a guillotine type cutter from Staples that I absolutely adore. It's 12x12 and made by Exacto. It was under $40. I can cut about 5 pieces of SU cardstock at a time on it. It's very accurate and it's easy to see the measurements. I totally love it!
I've had it for 3 or 4 years now and the blade is as sharp as the day I bought it. Cuts straight every time too. I can take off the teeny, tiniest sliver of paper with no frayed or crooked cuts.

Great explanation! I had always wondered what the difference was and, more importantly, why I should bother paying for another cutter. Now I know. Thankyou

I did run into this problem --- sometimes a small sliver of paper can get caught in the cutting guide and it causes subsequent cuts to look jagged.
It's relatively easy to take apart and clean out. Now it cuts perfectly again! Agree that you'll love it when it's working correctly!

Thanks for starting this thread, OCDstamper. I'm so frustrated with my fiskars paper trimmer too. just bought a new one and its still fraying the edges of my cardstock... will have to look into these other ones everyone suggested!
I also have a MM precision trimmer. Last year, at Christmas time, I allowed my 4 year old son to use it and he went over an eyelet with it. I am not sure if ti was a blade or a guide that was ruined. I e-mailed MM asking for an advice as to how to try to repair it. And guess what? They sent me a brand new one. How's that for amazing customer service? I really love that trimmer, it is precise and clean cutting. A self sharpening blade is a really nice touch. Highly recommend it.
I used a Fiskars triple track cutter for several years and was never totally happy with the cuts. I decided to try out the Tonic 12x12 guillotine cutter. I bought it with a coupon at Joann.com and also got free shipping when I purchased it. I have been extremely happy with the Tonic and would recommend it for making most cuts. The only draw back I've found with it is you can't use it to cut a "window" in a card, so I still use the old Fiskars for that. Hope this helps.
I found the edges frayed too much with the fiskars cutter. I recently purchased the tabletop cutter by Stampin' Up! and LOVE it. No more frayed edges. Easy to transport.
I still use my fiskars trimmer for scoring and also for making a "window" in a card like the previous poster.
