Default Why are we getting spam?

The last few days I have seen a lot of spam-type theads here. What is going on with that and why?

This is not related, but similar. A few weeks ago, the web site I design for, was hacked and had to be set up again. Crazy stuff going on out there.

I noticed it too. I used to get almost zero spam in my mailbox, but the last couple of weeks it's started appearing again. I forgot how much I hated it! At least I know by the stupid titles that it's spam. "everywhere They're beautiful seaweed" Yeah, I ain't opening that one!

I asked DH who moderates an arcade site, he said they get them, too. There is no way to stop it, unless you 'ban' certain words. Which, sounds like a good idea, but it would be hard...you could ban 'sex', but then when someone uses it in a legit thread, it would block it.

I guess we can just keep reporting them to the mods so they can delete them.

there's no real way to kill them off entirely. well, we could stop accepting postings, but that'd be sorta dumb :^)

best thing is to just report them immediately, then reply in the thread that you've reported, that way the mods don't get 500 reports on the same post. spammers are evil.

Default What about having to type in a code to make a post?

Many sites show a random code (alphanumeric) that you have to type in to validate you are a person before making a post.

Why don't we simply implement something like that?

Jenn just posted to another thread on this topic that these ARE real people who register just so they can make these vulgar postings! Sheesh, don't they have anything BETTER to do? GRRRRR!!!
