Default I thought I would die...

I made a very cute pouch/gift card holder for my friend's daughter's first birthday. Well, my friend's wife in a panic to open all the presents - just starts ripping the thing apart. She didn't realize that when you pull the ribbon loop it slides the card out of the pouch. My heart just dropped (along with my jaw) and my husband grabbed my hand, gave me a kiss and said "it's okay" - she doesn't know better.

I don't know about you --- but I just wanted to cry ---- it was just so darn cute and it was torn to bits!

I just wanted to share my story with others that might understand!!!

Thanks for listening!
K.

Isn't it WEIRD how attached and protective you can be of your creations? The first thing I ask my daughter when she gets back from a party is, "Did they like the card?" It IS an obsession....

I'm so sorry! You'd expect that from the one year old, but not from her mom!!

I am sure she was overwhelmed with a party for that age group. I do feel for you though. I made a card for a friends little girl with Fintastic and glued real tiny shells all over. I had the hardest time seeing that little girl tear each of those shells off and everyone say isn't that cute? (clenching jaw)

aw...i know how it is to see somehing anything you made especially something you stamped 'ruined' by someone you gave it to. i think its a crafter thing. i get terribly attached to my creations! i think everytime i give away something i made its like getting a little piece of me in the box/envelope i'm happy to do it and i can just imagine how adorable your creation must have been! is it in your gallery so we can oo and ah over it?

I would have been very upset to see something I worked so hard on ripped up like that! What is this lady thinking just to rip into something like that? I think she was very inconsiderate.

I can relate...
I made a slider card with Load's of Love for my nephew's 3rd B-day.
He just threw the envelop clear across the room in his haste to open the present. The weight of the pennies tore the the truck right of the card! I was really proud of the card and no one even really saw it.

But then next time I visited, he asked me fix his "truck," and his mom told me he had been sleeping with it! Definitely made me feel so much better!

Your husband sounds wonderful -- so in tune to you and your love of stamping. I am touched by his response.

I have had this happen as well as the old "you have way too much time on your hands" comment...as if I'm this lazy butt with nothing better to do than make a beautiful creation for your enjoyment...

Some people just aren't worthy. For them, I have a stash of DOLLAR TREE cards.
LOL.

Yup, I had that happen to me too. I had to quickly stop her and tell her to just pull the ribbon!

I often wonder when I see cards that have intricate methods of opening, hidden messages, etc. if the people who are not into stamping would know what to do with it! For that reason, there are several types of cards that I just don't bother with. I might make one just for my own enjoyment, but never to send or sell. For instance, I never make cards that need to be untied, because I leave a box of cards in the teacher's room at school, and I wouldn't want to keep checking and re-tying them all the time!
Not many people care as much as we do about our wonderful creations! Just do them for your own enjoyment.......and try not to think about what happens to them when they leave our loving hands!

What I find most touching about your story is that your DH (emphasis on the darling) knew how the mishandling of your creation would effect you. I'd gladly have one of my cards ripped up if it ment I'd get to see that he "gets it" (mine doesn't BTW). Give that guy a HUG!

My dh doesn't "get it" either. You are very luck to have such a good guy... not that my dh isn't a great guy! but he just doesn't "get it".

I'm sorry you had to experience. I, too, would have been horrified. Glad to know your dh is such a supportive one, and knew what was going on in your mind. He's a keeper!

What a great DH you have for understanding how hard it was for you to watch your hard work being destroyed! Bravo to him and you for just keeping quiet about it. Some people dont appreciate or understand the time and effort you put into making something just for them. I would try not to worry about it too much. If you ever want someone to open up your work and really LOVE it, send it to one of your friends on this site! That will certainly make someones day much better!

My heart screamed oh no when I read this, but I think your DH is wonderful. I too wonder if someone will be able to figure out how to open a special folded card. Don't send them. Regular fold is ok. I send any special folds to stamping friends. My DH will tell me if a card needs a little tweeking and does appreciate my "work". He saves all the cards I make him.

Such a good hubby you have. I would have probably stepped in and showed her how to open it properly - by saying "oh sorry it is being difficult - let me help you - this one IS a little different to open".

ah, i felt the pain and i also was pleased with the tenderness of your husband, it doesn't make the "hurt" any less painful, but it makes it bearable with someone who "gets" it comforting them...

LOL.
I had this comment for the first time. I made "Just Moved" cards- really really simple- we printed a message on white cardstock, and then cut it into 6 different postcards. Then I stamped 4 trees and "just moved" onto the background, and outlined the card in brown to add a border. Then I added a colored cutout of the loads of love truck with boxes in it. These took me a week to do a hundred of them, but only for an hour each evening or so.

At least one of my husbands friends (ironically the first person to take me to an SU party- although she wasn't interested) told him I had too much time on my hands. I did them while I sat and watched TV, and I happen to know they sit and watch too much TV too!!!!

Sorry for the thread jack rant- that's just SO rude. I can deal when people rip my stamped envelopes and throw the greeting cards away- I throw cards away too... but don't insult me. Luckily I also got lots of compliments on them.

As for the thread starter- I'm so sorry to hear about your creation. Hopefully she just didn't know there was another way to open it, and how wonderful you have a supportive husband there for you when you go into crazy stamper mode

First, kudos to your DH for understanding what that card creation meant to you. I was very touched by how he handled the situation with sensitivity to you. My DH gets it, too, and is so supportive. What a difference that makes!
Second, my heart just sank into the pit of my stomach when I read your sad story. I have learned very slowly to whom I do and do not give my handcrafted cards.
Third, the comment two others made about hearing the "you must have too much time on your hands." I, too, have heard this from a family member which really offended me. It's a very insensitive remark to make to someone who so lovingly creates something special for those s/he cares about. Later, I got to thinking, "Hey, I think that person is just jealous," and, so, I actually turned his unkind remark into a positive."
