Welcome, denidill! Faux tearing is where you take a torn piece of paper and use it to mask off an area, and then sponge a border on the uncovered area. This will give you the look of having an additional layer of torn paper on your card without the bulk of having an actual layer. I do this a lot on envelopes when I stamp one to match a card.
And how fun that you have your sister getting into stamping too! I would LOVE that, but my sis says she doesn't have a creative bone in her body, and has no desire to advertise the fact!

that's exactly what I told my sister when she first invited me to stamp with her. It's now 2-1/2 yrs later and I'm totally addicted to it!
Thanks for the explanation...I will definitely try it.
It is actually quite hilarious between what happened with my sister and I. She started going to stamping demo nights and showed me the cards she was making. Years ago, I used to make Xmas tags for presents (but not with stamps) and she thought I would like the stamping. Well, she has created an addict. I have bought so much stuff; I am one of those people those dives headfirst in something instead of taking it slow. I do not even want to imagine what I have spent. But I find the process to be so relaxing and I look forward to making a card whenever I get the chance. Then I scan it to my sister who lives 3 hrs away (and she sends me her stuff) so we can see what the other has made. Plus, we are going to trade stamps. She has taught me much of what I know and the rest I am getting from this site, some books and some magazines. The cards some people make are inspirational. I am a copycat for now!

I'm much like you -- except my sister lives in Illinois and I live in Florida. Talk about a 'long-distance' stamping buddy!:-D

This is too funny, cause I have gotten my sister Denise into stamping-she's done some on her own too and now that she's discovered ATC's she brought me into some swaps.

Boy, can I relate?! I resisted getting into this hobby too. My sister kept trying to get me to try it but I already did so many other crafts that I didn't want to try this one. I'm the kind of person who jumps in with both feet too! Now, I don't do any of those other crafts and I am rubber obsessed! It is so much fun though. I have always found doing something creative relaxing and a real stress reliever for me. My dh knows it too. He's been known to look at me when I'm stressed and tell me to go down to my craft room. LOL!
