Default Need Help categorizing SU Stamp sets

I really need to organize my stamp sets. I would like to have them organized by theme. How do you categorize them? You have all been so helpful in the past.
Thanks in advance!
Bev

Default Categorizing SU stamp sets

Hello Bev !!

This is how I do mine:

1) Alphabets
2) Baby
3) Birthdays
4) Background
5) Animals w/ sub catagories:
Birds, insects, frogs, critters
6) Sentiments only (no images or very little images in some sets)
7) Flowers only (very little words or verses in some sets)
Friendship ( Images & sentiments/ words/ verses
9) Sympathy
10) Thank-you / Gratitude

I think you get the idea !! Hope this helps !

Are you organizing in the sets? Or are you organizing the single stamps?

I have my sets broken up and the stamps are organized that way. The very fact of having sets that are part baby, part birthday, part wedding, and part everyday greetings...well, where do those get filed. So? They aren't in sets anymore.

I'll come back and share my categories a bit later...

So, here's my categories. Please keep in mind that I have a LOT of stamps, and that any sets are broken up. Also, these categories are based on my storage system, which is made up of shallow drawers the same size as letter paper.

Christmas (religious, sentiments/tags, poinsettia/holly/wreaths, and all others)
Backgrounds (large, and small/builders)
Elements (frames/shapes/swirls/shadows, and celtic/baroque/music/celestial)
Quilting/sewing/art/baskets/etc
Baby
Kids
Home/family (includes some sentiments)
Garden
Food/drink
Animals/birds/etc (realistic, solid/outline, and whimsical/punny)
Fall-winter scenics/snow/snowmen
Spring-summer scenics/beach/ships
Southwest
Trees/mountains
Leaves
Floral (8 subcategories by style of image)
Sentiments:
...Birthday (also includes birthday images)
...Graduation/other holidays/invites
...Builders
...You... (as in thinking of you, you are..., for you, etc)
...Hi/hello/friends/happiness
...Thanks/gratitude/kindness
...Sympathy/hope/comfort/get well/religious
...Wedding/anniversary/love/valentines (includes images where applicable)
...Bookplates/handstamped by/"oddballs"
Alphabets

I use pinterest a lot to get my ideas for cards. Since I've built a board for each stamp set, I keep mine alphabetically. That way I can grab the set quickly.

I have mine in a big pine wardrobe. I'm about 90% SU.
Top shelf-cardstock
Next shelf-flowers
Next-winter, Valentine's Day, fall, Halloween, Christmas
Next shelf-baby/kids, coffee/tea, beer/wine, wedding, graduation, congrats, & general images like swirls, designs, etc.

I moved all my birthday, thank you, encouragement, & general sentiments next to my stamping desk. I did split these stamp sets up.

That's so much easier and I use more of a variety of them now. I can't bear to split other sets up. It goes against my nature!

I've only split wood mounted birthday, thank you, & congrats/wedding sets. That's been great. I keep my clear mount and photopolymer (SU) in their respective cases. It would be too crazy to split those up!

OMG, not going to lie this was not fun!!! The whole time I was questioning my sanity, wondering if I would survive the ordeal. I stamped every wood mount stamp on sheets of cardstock, scanned the sheet into my computer, laminated it, put it in the correct stamp storage container mentioned below, and uploaded them to the correct Evernote notebook with appropriate tags! My clear and polymer stamps were already organized, and in Evernote. I definitely don't split them up, because there's no need with Evernote. I didn't want to spend the money, but purchased the Totally Tifany 1" 8.5x11 storage containers. I was surprised how many wood mount stamps fit in each container. While on a roll, my embossing folders are now organized and in Evernote. My cell, iPad, or computer are always handy for using Evernote. Now any of the thousands of stamp images or stamp sets, a die, or embossing folder can be found super fast, yeah!

Isn't this the age-old question! Different things work for different people, but this is what works for me, at least for now, and I have over 200 SU stamp sets on a standard white 5-shelf bookcase:

1) Words
2) Pictures
3) Words & Pictures
4) Words & Pictures with matching dies
5) Punches
6) Flowers
7) Sympathy
Seasonal (Christmas, etc)

There's aways some crossover. And some of the Seasonals I keep with the other categories, but they have a green 1/4" dot on the bottom of the spine to denote Seasonal.

Do whatever works for you. Even if you're not completely satisfied, at least you'll feel better after SOME type of organization, and you can always change it later. :-) Good luck!

All my stamps are un-mounted stored in binder boxes. Each box is a category (see attachment). I have all my non-Christmas holiday stamps in a project boxes with the paper, embellishments, etc. so there isn't an index for them. I still need to index my Christmas stamps but the boxes are labeled but some day I'll do the indexes.

Each of my boxes have a stamped index and I have small binders of the same index pages so I can flip through to find what I want by category. Most of the time I don't use the binders because I just go to the box I want.

The attached pic is old but it gives you the idea of the binder box storage I use. I've since finished un-mounting and re-labeling since this picture was taken.

Thank you for posting a picture. I, too, store my wooden stamp sets upright and I always worry that it is somehow harmful to them.
