Challenge Title: Make a Masterpiece!
Hostess: SkyNacho/Emily
Keyword: HYCCT1518
Date: October 18, 2015

This challenge is in honor of my mom, who died from brain cancer (hence my gray ribbon avatar). Although we do HYCCT in conjunction with breast cancer awareness month, one of the things that I appreciate about MD Anderson is that they treat patients with all kinds of cancer.

When I was in elementary school, there was a program in which parent volunteers brought a reproduction of a great work of art (the collection was owned by the public library) to their student's classroom and spoke to the kids about the artist and the painting. My mom really enjoyed being the "Picture Lady" and she did it for many, many years. At the end of each school year, on her last visit, she would make sure each student got a small, matted picture of their own to take home.

My challenge to you: pick a famous painting and use it as an inspiration to make a card. Some lucky person is going to get to take your work of art home with them!

Some suggestions to get you started:
  • Georges Seurat's "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" was done with a technique called pointilism, which is often a technique done with copics.
  • Henri Matisse had a phase where his art looks like shapes cut from construction paper, so try your hand at paper piecing.
  • Georgia O'Keeffe worked with watercolors to make her floral paintings-- is there anything hotter than watercolors for papercrafts right now?
  • Vincent Van Gogh had "Starry Night."
  • American artist Winslow Homer had a famous work called "Breezing Up," which is a nautical scene.
  • Edgar Degas liked to paint ballerinas.
  • Paul Cezanne did a lot of still life with fruits.
  • Andy Warhol's pop art is bright and bold.

There are so many paths to take with this! Techniques, subject matter, even just the colors of a famous painting can be your starting point. Please try to remember to share a link to your inspiration piece was so we can be inspired, too!

You can see my card here, and there is a link to my inspiration artwork as well.

UPLOADING INSTRUCTIONS:
1. All Hope You Can Cling To Challenge Entries must be uploaded to the Hope You Can Cling To Gallery, with the specific challenge keyword, no later than November 7th, 2015 at 12:00 Noon Central Time to be eligible for our fabulous prizes! Post a link to your entry in this thread.
2. You may not combine challenges, but you are welcome to create multiple cards for each challenge.
3. Please remember to put in the correct keyword when uploading your image. Copying and pasting the challenge keyword is recommended to avoid typos.
4. Please package all challenge entries with an envelope, protected with a clear plastic bag and mail them to our partner at the UT MD Anderson Cancer Center to benefit patients being treated for breast cancer and their family. We would like for them to receive cards throughout the month of October, but we understand if you'd like to mail all your cards at once.
5. Since these cards will be used by visitors for patients, most should be blank inside, but feel free to send cards with messages of hope for the patients in addition to your challenge cards!

My first thought was Van Gogh's Starry Night, but Ann used that one. So I went in another direction and found something else. Here's my card:

thanks for the challenge! I went a little off the beaten path with a well known English illustrator and author- Beatrix Potter- inspired by the soft colors of her Peter Rabbit illustration ( scroll down to January 24, 2011 entry). I used SU's Polar Party for my images, and added a perky pink polka dot tie. Here's HYCCT1518 holiday friends

What a smart choice to pick Beatrix Potter! I know Peter is probably the most famous, but I had a stuffed Jemima Puddleduck when I was little. Happy memory.

Creative and inspiring challenge, Emily. Thanks.

My inspiration came from my childhood. I used my chalks for the first time in years. The HYCCT challenges seem to cause all of us to get out tools, supplies and even stamps we haven't used in a long time.
