I'm in Long Beach! I'm new to this though; maybe I'd disappoint you. Do you have a favorite neighborhood shop? I'm sort of Michael's-ed out. Not that I don't pretty much always spend money when I go in there, but still. It would be great to see something interesting.

Good Morning! It would be fun to meet up.
I, too, am learning my way around SCS. I am trying to use stamp sets and CS before I buy more. AC Moore , Michael's and Tall Mouse just don't call out to me. Not that I don't find a stamp or two in my house and my wallet a dollar or two short!!
PM me so we can pick a location, etc.
Anyone coffee/tea drinkers?

Sure, I'd meet for a coffee somewhere. I'm on leave this summer, and just goofing around all day long. I'll have to get back to work one of these days, but... not today. Anyone else want to come?

Akemi~~~more beautiful cards. I haven't figured out how to add cards to my gallery so I will leave it at that. I have quite a bit to go to catch up to you two. We must meet up this summer.

Did you hear that Scrappin in the hills is going out of business at the end of the month? They are in Anaheim Hills. I went there on Thursday and most of it has been cleaned out, but I picked up a nice 12x12 paper storage rack for $30.

Sounds like fun Lisa!
As a Stampin' Up demonstrator, do you have to buy the equipment for yourself?

@Florence: As a SU! demonstrator you have to buy your own products but there is a 20% discount. When I signed up, it was just to get the discount, haha. But now I also do stamping classes out of my house about once or twice a month, and it's been really fun!

@Marie: Yes, I am a SU! demo. Not too much inventory left at Scrappin' when I was there on Thursday. I got the paper storage rack and my mom found some ribbon at 75% off. My friend went there on Friday and she said they still had some 12x12 paper, but there wasn't anything she liked. Unless you're nearby, it's probably not worth the trip, since I'm guessing a lot of people went there over the weekend.

Well ladies, I'm packing for Convention now and won't have access to e-mail while I'm gone ... I'll be flying back home on Saturday night! I just posted my swap cards on my blog. Super excited to see all of the ideas!!!

Would it be easier to PM or e-mail one another? Or, we can keep chatting on this site. Makes no difference to me.

So, Lisa, did you actually sit in the hotel lobby in your pajamas? Your cards are cute, but I especially like your roommate gift. I hope you had a good trip.

I did a little driving around last week. I stopped by Your Pad or Mine in Garden Grove, and at Stampin' EJ's in Costa Mesa. Both shops were fun, and full of stamps. I enjoyed talking to both shop owners as well. It sounds like they have nice communities of stampers who visit their shops. Between my family and my work, I don't know if I will get to "go out and play" to any of their activities any time soon, but it does look like fun.
It was a nice change from Michaels.

Cheers,
Florence

Hi everyone ... I'm back from Convention. All I can say is WOW. I had the most amazing time! Here is a link to my first blog entry. I'll be blogging a little bit each day since it takes awhile to upload pictures.

StampingHut.com: Convention 2010: Flower Power Party (Wed, 7/21)

The pajama swap was fun! People were pretty wiped out though because we had just come back from the flower power party, so we didn't hang out for very long. I didn't post any pictures of the swap since I didn't get permission - - I know people would not want embarrassing photos of them in their jammies posted on the internet!

Florence: thanks for the tips on the local stamp stores. Did they sell card stock and tools there or was it just rubber stamps???

Hi Lisa,

Glad you had a good time. It looks like great fun. I'm going to a conference for math in a couple of weeks (please don't tell me what you think about my vocation! I am a math professor), and I expect to find it exciting and inspiring as well. I don't think I'll sit around with the other participants in my pajamas though. Something about being around so many people who all have been thinking about the same kinds of things gets the ideas flowing. I'm hoping to learn about teaching math for biology majors, and maybe about using math do describe natural systems (like erosion and water pollution), just in case you were wondering. I'm giving a brief presentation about using writing in math classes. The students complain about that, but they really seem to learn the subjects that they write about.

ANYWAY, I'm looking forward to seeing more of your pictures from the convention. I like the way you tell stories on your blog; it's fun to read.

Both shops were all stamps with a few tools and inks, and not much paper. I would say they are both worth a visit, just to check them out. They have nice activities like classes and such, as well.

Cheers,
Florence

@Florence: My brother is a math professor, too! He teaches at a few of the local community colleges. I studied engineering at UCLA and took calculus for two years. It was very theoretical since it was geared to math majors. I remember they had a separate calculus program for life science majors and while it was known for being easier, I'm not sure how else it was different it was from the program I was enrolled in. I like your ideas - I think being able to feel a connection between the abstract mathematical concepts with real world biology applications would really motivate your students to study.

Now to get back to stamping ... I just posted another Convention blog entry. Yay! Enjoy!

Do you want to do one of these outings at Stampin' EJ's? I wouldn't want to go by myself, I think, but if one of you gals wants to meet up, I'd be up for it (schedule allowing). One of them is this Friday; I think I can do it, but I have to check that my husband can get the kids. The one below that is on Thursdays. I'm out August 8th, but I'm probably around the other two.

A 'La Card Cafe Friday!
This is an AFTERNOON session for all you working gals! StampinEJ's quick and easy cards!!!

Here are the upcoming dates: July 30, 2010
Time: 2:00-6:00pm
Place: Debra's Cottage - 2777 Bristol Street, Costa Mesa, CA 92626
Fee: $3.00/card or 5 cards/$10.00

*Please remember to bring your basic kit: 12" paper trimmer, sharp detail scissors, pencil, ruler, adhesives and 3D foam mounts.

StampinEJ's "free, three" Thursdays!
You may make one card for FREE! Each additional card is only $THREE! Come join us on the FIRST THREE Thursdays of the month!

Dates: Aug 5, Aug 12, Aug 19, 2010
Time: 10:30-3:30 (drop in any time)
Place: Debra's Cottage - 2777 Bristol St, Costa Mesa, CA 92626
RSVP: by Wed night ([email protected])

StampinEJ's quick and easy cards utilizing stamps, stickers, patterned paper, ribbons and other fun embellishments!

Cheers,
Florence

I teach at Cal State, Long Beach. Where did your brother do his degree? Where is he teaching now? I know it's hard times at the community colleges. I mostly know the community college faculty who were once students at CSULB, but there is a small world chance that I know him.

I want to work on my twinchies (OK, stamp people, that name is just goofy), but talking about school makes me feel like I should get back to work!

Yes, that's the same Bristol. This one is a bit, um, I want to say south? I'm not sure. It is not next door to the mall, but it is on the same street, and in Costa Mesa.

I can't do the class on July 30 since we have dinner plans with friends.

However, the August classes on the 12th or the 19th might be do-able.

Hey Florence, I've been stamping for many years now so I'm running out of storage space! I have many stamps that I love but I don't have time to use them ... most of my stamping time is spent planning out classes and for those, I have to use current product. I'm thinking of holding a sale event at my house in September and whatever doesn't sell there, I will post for sale here on SCS.

Definitely let me know. I will ask friends if they are looking for stamp sets. Any other products or just stamps?

Marie, did you post your stuff in the buy/sell list? I didn't see it.
Lisa, I'm thinking about buying these two:
building rollagraph
and
houses rollagraph
I think I could do without the handle but it might be easier to have it too.
Are those among the things you are thinking of getting rid of? (they are SU! aren't they?)
Thanks,
Florence

Florence, Sorry I don't have those wheels. You will want to use the handles so you can ink up your wheels without getting ink all over your hands, but more importantly, the handle gives you even pressure as you roll the wheel across your paper. The standard wheel uses the standard size handle; the jumbo wheel uses the jumbo size handle.

Another nice feature of the handles is that they can also hold an ink cartridge so you can roll continuously across gift wrap or 12x12 scrapbook pages. If you're just doing a greeting card though, you don't need the ink cartridge. Just roll it across your ink pad!
