Eastern Iowa Shoebox Swap
City of Five Seasons
Saturday, January 31st, 2009
Calling all Eastern Iowa SCS stampers! A shoebox swap to meet and stamp with area SCS members will be held in Marion, Iowa on January 31st. This event is being organized by candlequeen5.
Date: January 31st, 2009
Place: Living Water United Methodist Church, 1155 Grand Avenue, Marion, IA
Time: 9 AM to 6 PM (maybe earlier if we get done) Feel free to leave if you need to
Cost: $10.00
Registration Deadline: January 19th (just in time for the new catty!!)
There will be places for 35 people. Please post to this thread or PM me if you want to be added to the list. If we get more than 35 people that want to attend, I will start a waiting list.
What is a shoebox swap?
This is a fun swap to create a lot of cards in a short time but only have to come up with one great idea of your own! Prior to the day, you will need to create a card and bring all the supplies needed for each participant to create the card. The number all depends on how many people we get to sign up. I will let you know about 2 weeks ahead of time. These cards should not take more than 10-15 minutes to complete. I definitely do not want to discourage challenging cards or cards showcasing new techniques. However, if your card is intricate and fancy you may want to pre-stamp or pre-assemble some items for the other stampers. You will need to make a completed sample of your card so everyone can see what the card is supposed to look like. Then each person will be able to complete your card and take home a variety of cards.
This is a full card swap. Cards should have a minimum of two layers and one embellishment. You need to supply all materials needed for your card. That means cardstock, ribbon, eyelets, stamps, ink, etc. All cardstock will need to be pre-cut to 1/2 sheet or to the size needed for your card. This not only saves you money, but the rest of us time. No vendor requirements on all supplies, but quality, thick cardstock is a MUST! Current Stampin Up products are preferable. No envelopes need be supplied. Recipes are a MUST! Please print on small sheets of paper and put in each bag with the kit!
Put all pieces needed to assemble your card into separate sandwich bags or kits. Include written/printed instructions for your card in each bag. You will not be demonstrating these, so please make sure your instructions are very, very clear so that even beginners can easily complete your card.
Put your original card, your kits, stamps, ink and anything else that is needed but not in the basic supply kit in a Shoebox or basket. On the outside please put your name so we know who made which project. You may want to cut a few extras in case boo-boos occur. Please label all your supplies.
Please bring a BASIC SUPPLY KIT to include: Stamp-n-scrub w/stamp cleaner, scissors, adhesive, pop dots or foam dots, bone folder, paper cutter/scorer, scissors, straight edge, and a black journaling marker and whatever else you cant stamp without (markers?). Have some sort of carry case for these items as youll be moving to each station.
Please also bring something to carry your completed cards in that will keep them safe. Bring your camera if you want to take pictures of the card samples in case you dont have time to complete all the projects.
YOU NEED TO BRING ENOUGH SUPPLIES FOR EVERY PERSON THAT ATTENDS THE EVENT TO MAKE YOUR CARD. Final count will be given 2 weeks in advance.
Other Info:
If you have any questions, please pm me. I will be happy to explain any details you wish to know about.
YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER AND PRE-PAY
Cost: $10.00 per person. Your registration must be paid no later than January 19th. Mail your registration form and payment to me. There are no refunds, but you may offer your spot to someone else. All funds collected will be spent on the event. Heres whats planned:
Shoebox Swap Youll know how many to make when we post the final count, and youll have plenty of notice since the deadline is a month ahead of the event.
Lunch and light afternoon snacks will be provided. If you have a favorite snack you would like to share, please feel free to bring it. The kitchen will be available for our use.
Door Prizes If you would like to donate a wrapped gift, we will draw names through out the day. Stamped projects are also welcomed. If its something youd like to take home, its probably perfect! Be sure to include your name somewhere inside so the lucky winner knows who to thank. If you wish to donate a prize, please PM me so I will know for planning.
Name Tags Make and wear a nametag with your name and your SCS name so that we know you on sight.
Church Donations Id love to be able to give a little back to the church. If youd like to donate any canned goods or non-perishable food for the local food bank, they have a box available. I will also have a box for full cards to donate to their card ministry. Participation is completely OPTIONAL.
Garage Sale Please bring any items that you would like to trade or sell. Current SU supplies may be traded but can not be sold. Any retired products may be offered for sale. We will have some shopping time during the lunch break.
***I want to take a minute and thank Deb for this wonderful opportunity of getting together once again with a great group of women. If it was not for Deb, I would not have known how to go about putting one together.
PS I copied her post from way back in December.
I can't wait to get together again and meet new people as well.

Oh fun! I'm definitely gonna have to think about this one. I love the Shoebox Swaps, but the weather can be so iffy the end of January and I travel a bit of a distance to get there. I'll have to think about it a while and then let you know.
Hi Jeanette
I understand about the weather and if the weather is inclement then I will reschedule because I dont want anyone to risk their lives to come. We would love to have you. Just let us know!

Oh Chrystal... where are you going? Sounds like an adventure to me! I love going to other countries. One year my DD and I were in South Africa on a mission trip about those same dates. It was interesting to see how the South African's rang in the new year.
Hi Jeanette
I am going to Dubai. It is in United Arab Emirates. I am going to visit a friend who lives over there. I have never been transatlantic so it will be fun! The flight over is 14 hours and 16 hours back. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I hope the weather cooperates and lets you come as you are just delightful to be with!

Cool! Have a load of fun with your friend and exploring the sites, smells, and traditions of another land.
The flights are tedious - South Africa was 22 and 25 hours respectively - but well worth it for the experience you will have.
I've also been on mission trips to Kazakstan twice, Bulgaria twice, and Germany once. I just love it!!! (And those flights were not nearly as long - only about 12 -14 hours each).
Hi ladies
Just a quick bump from Dubai. I am having flight issues so I will be a few days later than originally planned but will try to check this for the next few days while I have internet access. I have a few emails to get to and will add the ones who have replied via email. Have a great day!

Hi ladies
I think I am alittle more functional this morning. I finally arrived home last night at about 11:15pm. I have added a few more ladies and have a few more that are still thinking about it. I have been asked if I will reschedule if there is bad weather and the answer is YES! I will take a consensus of a date that works for most ladies. If you need anything else just let me know. I also have a few ladies bringing snacks and door prizes if you are bringing either of those items please let me know so I can add you to my list! Thanks

I'm not sure. I'm trying to talk her into. She has a friend who is also contemplating. Cathy Boggs is a friend of mine, so I won't be by myself! Not that that would matter! No strangers among stampers, I say!

Hi Deb
I am debating myself. Do I wait for new stuff or just make do with what I already have?! I have so many stamps I should use but new ones are always better! haha Good Luck you will do fine!
See you in a few weeks!

I have not designed my card yet. I hope get it done this week because making kits for 35 cards (potentially) is quite a bit of work. For my sanity's sake I need to make a decision ASAP!
I just found this by accident. I am about 90 minutes north of you. I would love to come, but I am committed at my daughter's school that day. If you do this again, or if you end up rescheduling, I'd LOVE to come.
Hi Shirley
We would love to have you. If anything changes feel free to let me know. I will add you to my list to contact you for another swap. PM with all your info email, SCS name, full name, address and phone and I will put you on my list. Have a great day!
Thanks
Crystal
