Well, I originally posted in demo only area - but thought I should really post in the general forum.
OK....I've been thinking about it forever, but I have finally decided to sell a bunch of stamps at a yard sale in August - as well as other scrapbooking supplies (If you're in the cinci area - pm me for the address).
Anyway, I was wondering what prices you would charge for stamps at a yard sale? Do you think they will sell or do you think it a waste of time as yard salers generally are looking for things for next to nothing? My friend and I are doing it and she has mostly baby clothes and things and I have a lot of craft supplies, clothes and various other things.
Do you think it would be worth it to post an ad in the paper mentioning stampinup? I don't want it to be a total waste of time - but I also don't want to just "give" my stamps away. I would like to try this before going to the hassle of posting online or on ebay and having to wait for payment and mailing out etc...
Well, all the rummage sales I've been to here that advertise stamps ~~ the ladies are there before it even opens!! Some people try to sell them for not much less than the original price ~~ & they're used!!! I wouldn't buy those, but that's not to say someone else wouldn't, especially if they're retired. I was at a rummage last year ~~~ tons & tons of SU stamp sets, all for $1-$3 less than catalog price. I was there the second day & she still had tons. Now, I don't know how much she had when she started, but someone next to me did mumble something about "not much of a deal".
So I can't really help with pricing, but definitely mention stamps in your ad. They'll come!!
I live in the Cincinnati area- let me know where you live and when you'll have your sale, and I'll send out the word to all my stamping and scrapbooking buddies.
I went to a catalog open house last week and bought some outdated stamps. I bought the four-piece Long Stemmed for $6. Alphabet stamp sets were going for $10, and they were probably priced too low. I would think $12- $15 would have still been a good deal. It seemed like everything was about 30 to 40 percent of the original price.
If you want to pm me a list of what you have, I can pass that along, as well. Also, did you think about the B/S/T forum?
I would start higher then if they dont sell lower prices. But most people expect super duper bargains at yard sales. I think ebay is a better place if you want a bigger return ....
I sold some of my sets in a garage sale last summer and I took off 30%, there were a few who grumbled, but then I reminded them that the stamps were complete sets, in good shape and they did not have to pay SU's ridiculous shipping and handling rates or state sales tax! Pretty much stopped the grumblers and I sold all but one set - I had a few that had black ink all over the wood, the rubber was in good shape but the wood looked bad, I took a little extra off for those if they asked me.
I am not a SU demonstrator, just had to get rid of some stamps so DH could not complain when I bought new ones - lol
It seems like the ones that are on sale here (or through my demo) are about 20-30% off of regular price. I would advertise them in the ad (so those people come!). I wouldn't mark them much lower than the 30% off though. Your regular rummage salers will maybe complain but if a stamper came they might buy at that price, because they aren't paying shipping, etc. for the sets. I've never sold anything on this site, but it looks like people do very well selling here. So if they don't sell at the sale, try another avenue to get rid of them. Don't give them away. Even an ad in the paper may be a way to go too.
My experience selling in garage sales has been poor...everyone wants big bargains. If you can be firm in holding to a reasonable price (not lower than 30% off) then you'll do okay. Just don't let yourself be hounded into selling them for a buck or two. You'd be better off not selling them in your garage sale at all and trying the BST forum or ebay rather than giving them away.
I am having a garage sale in Auguast and will put SU in the add. I am hoping that will attract stampers. I haven't started pricing yet.......but I want to price to sell.....I am looking forward to seeing how it goes. I live in a suburb of Chicago. Good luck on your sales and let us know how it goes.
One thing that might help.... post in your local "Arts and Crafts" section on www. craigslist.com....
I know lots of crafters check there and it could help bring traffic (the kind you want -- maniac stampers like us!)

I think you might do better on Craigslist. At least there are no fees, you can set how much you want for the sets, and only people who are looking for stamp sets will contact you. Just a suggestion.

I agree that you should definitely put "stampin up" in your advertisement for the yard sale. Each weekend, I go yard-saling and if any of the ads say scrapbooking, stamping or craft supplies, I make sure to be there as soon as they are open. I have got some great deals that way.
I bought some SU sets at a yard sale just a couple weeks ago. The seller had prices by the size of the set. She was actually selling them at a real bargain - $3 for a small set, $6 for a medium set and $10 for a large set. She also had individual stamps for sale (like from sets that had been broken up) for 50� to $1 each. Personally, I think she sold herself short, but I am not dissapointed at getting them at that price.
Another yard sale with SU I went to was selling retired sets for 50-70% of the original price. But with each set, you got an incentive stamp free.
If you are looking to make maximum profit from them, try ebay. But if you just want to sell them quickly, I think 50% at a yard sale is reasonable. You might want to put the original price on the sticker to show the buyer what a deal they are getting. And remember, you got a lot of use out of them and that use is worth something. So even if you sell them for half, you got your money's worth.
