Not only do I notice a lot ("a lot are 2 words") of people making this mistake, but also a lot of companies in their advertising. I hate it:Less and fewer.

I always tell students to use fewer if it's countable (fewer M&M's in the jar after I chowed on them), and less if not (use less pepper when cooking!). It can be confusing sometimes--I need less milk in my recipe; I need fewer cups of milk in my recipe.

Or, I'll just order takeout!

I know you're only joking, but hey! ;)

(For those who don't know me as well as Wrose does... I'm of mostly Czech descent. And I think Wrose knows me well enough to realize I am *not* really offended!)

Sorry to hijack, but that reminded me of when my sister was in college. There was a college band called The Plaid Orphans, and my sister wasn't particularly fond of them. Her friend told her that was because plaids and Czechs don't go well together. :p

Getting back on track... I've seen people confuse "descent" and "decent."

I noticed an ad in our newspaper's classified section recently that read as follows (but I'm changing the name of the school and location):

Lost: 2009 Washington High School class ring. Lost in Springfield area. Reward offard. Call xxx-xxxx.

I love the Czechs and plaids.
Bad spelling in classified ads wouldn't surprise me too much.
I'm still contemplating writing in to our main national broadsheet newspaper after no less than the education editor wrote that it was time for students to avert their eyes (or their thoughts, can't remember) to the change-of-mind form. Now I always thought you averted your gaze from something  .
