What is the most popular card size you sell?

Hi ladies,

I am thinking about selling hansmade cards for this year's craftshows. I am wondering what is the most popular size you sell and if there are any categories you can recommend. The standard card size seems a bit small so I was thinking 5x7? Thanks in advance for your advice.

I think 5 x 7 personally is nice. But if people are mailing them...if I'm correct there is more postage they have to pay at the post office. I'm positive. I did grad invitations and it was almost 80cents to mail...it may have been more??? So if you want to do 5 x 7 you will have to tell your customers that it costs more at the post office or they should be hand delivered if they don't want to pay the extra. Good luck

I pretty much make all of my cards the standard 4.25x5.5 since it's easiest to cut a piece of 8.5x11 in half to use as a base, but wanted to chime in for the postage rate portion...

5X7 shouldn't cost any more to mail. We use 6x9 envelopes at work all the time (copy paper sized stuff folded in half) to save on postage (since if we leave it flat, then we have to pay more for the "flat" rate. I think the USPS website has a list of minimum and maximum sizes for the different rates.
I know if it goes over 1/4 inch thick you get bumped up to higher postage.

Maybe the higher rates on some 5x7 is since you have more room to add more embellishments it makes it heavier? But a standard 5X7 regular weight isn't more due only to size.

That sounds right to me as well. If you go into Hallmark, it's only the really big ones that say "requires extra postage". I'm sure that I have mailed cards larger than our standard size, with only one stamp. Square envelopes always cost more to mail.
Another nice size is one that fits in a standard business envelope. I forget the dimensions, but you could measure it. You can only get one card from a piece of cs, with some left over.

Ladies thanks for the input. Have any of you had any customer comment that the standard A2 card is too small? That is really my greatest concern but at the same time I don't want to make them too big.

Always and only standard 1/4 sheet size.

Generally most people I sell to don't mind the invitation size cards. I have however been asked to make larger ones so that more people can sign.

Square cards are quite popular for me too. I usually do 5.5 x 5.5 so I can find envelopes to fit

I think this is correct:

6x9 envelopes require extra postage.
5 3/4 x 8 3/4 envelopes do not require extra postage.

Square envelopes always require extra postage (though sometimes they can make it through with regular - I don't ever chance it!)

I design invitations alot, and these are the guidelines I've been using since the 07 postal change.

And to answer your question about the most popular size card... hmmm. I don't sell stamped cards. I design invitations that I design in Illustrator. The most popular sizes for me to sell are 5.5x8.5 and 4.25x5.5. These are standard printing sizes for postcards and easy to get nice quality envelopes for.

WHen I am shopping for the 'right' card to give someone, I usually lean towards a square card. I don't mind the extra postage, and the size and shape seem to set it apart to me. Just my thoughts.

I have never heard any comments on my cards being too small.
