Here's the scoop. I talked the manager at my Michael's. She was very apologetic. Went over details of exactly what happened and who I talked to and who actually "helped me". She said this never should of happened and the associate will be reprimanded and written up. I told her that I appreciated her acknowledging the situation and her apology. She offered for me to come into the store any time and meet her personally and offered to give me a discount the next time I was there. Super nice lady!!! I have to say I was impressed with the follow up and personal call to resolve the matter. So far I will continue to go to Michael's but from now on if I feel injustice at a store, I will definitely speak up again! Tawanda!!!
I'm sorry your service wasn't very good. I'm just sitting here being jealous, because I have no Michaels anywhere near me. I have 2 Hobby Lobbies but they are both over an hour away from me in opposite directions. I would love to have any store other than Walmart where I could get to without having to drive forever. (especially with the price of fuel.)
I'm glad I found this thread! While I haven't ever been psyched by the selection at either Mike's or Joann's near me (I live in the Detroit metro area so I have lots of both), and none of the stores ever have enough registers open, I will say that the people I deal with tend to be quite reasonable -- I was at Mike's yesterday, brought 4 or 5 things to the register, then remembered I had a Joann's coupon. The clerk actually got *excited* because the one thing I bought that wasn't already on sale was the Martha circle cutter, and the coupon saved me like 7 bucks. Even though she had to void and re-ring, she was still pleasant.
However, I try to take as much of my business as I can to my LSSs (again - lots to choose from). There, not only do I get friendly, knowledgeable service, many of the stores give the same perks as the corporate boxes -- sales/coupons, competitor coupon days -- but they'll also give tips on when new product is coming in, and will do special orders or even let me piggyback on a store order. Can't beat it. Plus, D-town's been in an economic slump for ages, so it feels good supporting local business owners. If you're fortunate enough to have local options (and I know not everyone does), support 'em.
Does that sound too preachy? I'm sorry if it does. Just another way to send a message to the big guys that we shouldn't have to tolerate bad service.

Please can I come shop with you?? Please?:p
The only people that have worse attitudes/service than Mike's in my area is the LSS! Random closures, poor hours, Attitude (with a capital A), items significantly over MSRP. You name it, these people do it badly. Ugh, at least I'll still go in Michaels.
And I have to wonder HOW these people stay in business....

My LSS was a lot like yours ~ whenever I went in there I felt like I was imposing on them. They went out of business last week. (And I snagged four of their papah shelves for a SONG! :-)).
Okay, I wish I had seen this thread a few days ago and I could have chimed in my 2cents then....no matter.
My experiences with Michael's here in the St. Louis, MO area are about the same as everyone elses....inconsistent service and poor inventory. I live close to 3 Michael's (with in 30 min. or less) and they all are as different as night and day with Service issues. But, they are all fairly consistent with inventory...generally out of what you came in for!
My biggest issue has been with their coupon policy. At one time you could only use one coupon at a time....I would have family members (who don't craft much....can you imagine that?) go with me and purchase whatever it was. Then the policy changed so that you could use up to 5 coupons at any one time...that was great b/c all family members and neighbors would save coupons for me. Then with in the last couple of months the policy changed again to only one coupon per family per day...I found this to be true at 2 of the 3 stores.
On that day, that was the straw that broke the camel's back......that and the rudeness of the clerk. After getting the same message from the store manager, I went home and called their corporate office. I got a complacent person who took my complaint. Not an "I'm sorry" or anything.
After I hung up the phone I no longer desired to shop at Michael's. It is just not worth it to me. I can get so much better service at my LSS (For Keeps Sake...shameless plug, no I don't work there!) and if they do not have something they will try to order for me. If you belong to their Tote Club (a one time cost of $25 includes a free tote bag....with their name on it...you do not have to bring it in either) you get 40% any one item one time a month and 20% off your whole purchase one time a month. Not to mention that if you take classes, depending on the class, get 15 - 25% off your purchases the night of the class. They always have fresh merchandise and everyone of the staff are friendly and helpful, even when they are swamped!
Can you see where I am going here? Yep, not going back to Michael's!!! Thanks for reading my 2 cents and I am off my soapbox now!
About a year ago, we got an Archiver's which is strictly stamping and scrapbooking. EVERYONE there is super nice, very knowledgeable and goes out of their way to be helpful. Everyone is a crafter and knows the products. The other day something I requested came in, I was called so knew it was there. Unfortunately a young man looked for it but couldn't find it. However, he explained the policy of holding items only 48 hours before reshelving (I was out of town when called and then forgot about it when I returned -- my falult completely.) He then told me how I could guarantee a hold by prepaying because they move those items to a secure location in the office. Was super nice.
A few days later a woman called and asked it I still wanted the item. I explained that I came in, but it was gone. SHE WAS HOLDING IT IN HER HAND! We laughed about the man thing!!! Anyway I was again out of town so I told them it was only fair to go ahead and let someone else have it as I had not planned to use the monogram kit until I finished moving. She told me how to be able to use a coupon before it expired by prepaying even though the item was not yet in the store.
Now I don't have the kit I need for Christmas presents, but I am totally satisfied with the quality of service I received. Surely Archiver's doesn't pay their help a great deal more than other retailers. So what makes the difference? When I go in for classes, someone usually comments that they would love to work there.
