Is this uncool?
I have a stamping question ... but I don't know if it's actually an "appropriate" question, so please be gentle w/ me if you answer.
I can't possibly buy all the stamps I like ~ even though I do try! Is it ok to ask other stampers to swap images w me? For example, I have a ton of SU and a lot of Cornish Heritage Farms, Artistic Outpost, Papertrey & Inkadinkado stamps plus various single images from a lot of other companies {like Paper Makeup and The Greeting Farm to mention two} ... but I would like to be able to participate in the Unity Blog Hop, and occasional design team calls but I do not always have an image from the particular company and funds are not always available for a new purchase. Would it be ok to ask someone to stamp images for me and I stamp some for them? Is that uncool?
I realize the goal is for the companies to sell their stamps. I get that, but I can't possibly buy stamps for every challenge, kwim? So, what do you think? Is it ok to ask? If so, would I post in the swap forums? I just have no idea.
TIA,
Susan

I have never done this, but I know people do swap images. Nothing wrong with it in my opinion. I don't know where to tell you to look for the swaps. Maybe the wishRAK?
It is absolutely cool. You can join in the Pay It Forward (PIF threads), Wish RAK(Random Acts of Kindness) or post a thread in the ISO or Trade forums.
I have played in the PIF threads and had a lot of fun. Be careful. 6 hours goes by very very quickly! LOL.
I joined the Wish RAK, but was overwhelmed with the rules, etc.
I have replied to people's post for images in the ISO forum. HTH.
I know Stamp Companies want us to buy their stamps and are happy to allow us to swap images because it IS fun and it does encourage their sales. I want to buy them too.
And when there's an image that I've received in a swap that I would really like to go ahead and buy, but can't afford to at that time, it does go straight onto my wish-list for when I can. Even if I'm not buying now, I probably will eventually
Susan, People are soooo generous on this site it is definitely cool!! I've even had people pm me asking to swap images before and I think it's great. Were all going to need to do more of this with the way the economy is!
If you check on the swaps thread, you will see products and images- and can join in swaps. You can also post requests for images- I recently met some very nice people on SCS that stamped me images- I traded them for nestability shapes.......It is great! I also join swaps...aka Whiff of Joy- I purchased 2 stamps and swap my 2 images (stamped mult times for other images).
Feel free to PM me to see if I have anything you may want to trade for! I enjoy a variety of images as well.
Just a thought on this topic... please don't stone me!
Please remember that most of these companies are small companies. When you are trading their images on a large scale (in lieu of purchasing) it has effects. Most are nice enough to allow some trading, but if only one person buys an image and trades it off to 100 people it can really hurt their bottom line.
I don't own a stamp company. I just wanted to throw out my two cents. I'm certainly not saying trading is a bad thing.

No stones I totally understand what you are saying! I have done image swaps before and sometimes it leads to new business for companies. I just recently swapped with a friend - she sent me some Rileys and to I had no idea they were so cute or that the image was so large so it's a good way to try a company you may not have bought before.

I agree! It is a great way to try stuff out.
I'm just concerned because I see so much of this going on in a large scale. I'm not sure if anyone has ever voiced the other side. I hesitated to say anything for a while because I didn't want anyone to think I was saying they were doing something bad. That was not my reason for posting.

I have wondered about that too. But I do like to try a couple of images from a company before buying them. There are some that I just don't do a very good job coloring. It has nothing to do with the stamps, the image or the stamp company, it is my ability to color them. I had never really gotten into coloring images until a friend stamped me a couple of Rileys. Now I own almost all the Rileys (and Hannas) and have a collection of Prismas and Copic markers. On second though maybe trading wasn't such a great idea!

You kinda sound like me. One is never enough (of anything!). ;)

I agree with Jeanne. Swapping isn't a no-no like photocopying, but if I like the product, I want to support the company.
I've personally never swapped images because you're so limited. You don't have the option to color it in different ways because you may not know what kind of ink they used. You can't emboss it, or paper piece it. Plus, if you make mistakes, you're stuck with it.

No, I understand totally! That's why I asked. I would never do that on a large scale, like 100 people ... I don't have that much time, lol!! I have worked for small business owners and I know how important loyalty is to a company. And, I promise to buy as many stamps and embellishements and supplies as my budget can handle - pinky swear!!
What I really want is to jump in on the Unity Stamp Blog hop, and occasionally I'll see a design team try-out but I don't have an image to use.
Thank you to EVERYONE for your advice and suggestions! You are all so kind, sweet and willing to share. That's why I hang out here on SCS all the time. I've never had a question that someone wasn't able to help me with (plus I get awesome ideas for projects!)
Thanks again so very much,
Susan

I totally agree! WRAK is awesome! One of the great things, is you can specify what kind of ink you want used when you wish for an image. You can say Copic if you want something that works with Copics, or staz-on if you want to watercolor, or you can list the actual color you want used.
I have done a few image swaps and because of that I recently purchase two stamps I would have never bought otherwise, and have added a few more to my must have list. Likewise one I thought I really wanted one I'm not getting because it wasn't exactly what I thought.
I definitely recommend Wish RAK. My experience with that has been that a sampling will often be enough to "force" me to buy a stamp or set. In that way, it's kind of like the Gallery, but IRL.
Susan, Hi! I have some Unity stamps...if there is something specific you're looking for I'll send it if I have it. I am sure once you see an image up close...you'll want the stamp for yourself, anyway!
Also, post on the Unity member section and I am sure someone will have it if I do not! The Unity peeps are super nice!

Yes, you should have someone send you some Unity images and participate in the blog hop. I will be playing along that day and I as well have some images, so feel free to let us know what you like!
