Scored 4 old SU sets at the goodwill, this morning, for 3$ a set. I only recognize 1 - Lovely as a tree, dated 2001.
The others, I haven't got a clue.
9 piece set dated 1998 looks like topiary rose with a pot, a stick, and some balls, heart, vines.
3 piece set dated 2001 largest stamp has a girl holding a kitten and pulling a wagon containing another girl and a dog
12 piece set dated 1997 very simple solid shapes that might have been suitable for a calendar, watermelon slice, heart, shamrock, leaf, apple, flower, egg, snowflake, fir tree, jackolantern, sailboat and star.
They were all very roughly cut before mounting. is it possible to trim them closer without unmounting them?
when I have bought second hand badly mounted stamps what I have done is taken an exacto knife to the back of it and just cut away the excess rubber... but, try stamping them first, if you don't get a halo you may not need to bother.
I have microwaved stamps to loosen the sticky and then was able to reapply. In case you do need to remove them. I don't know how this would work with such "vintage" stamps.
The 9-piece set from 1998 is called "Topiary" (go figure!) I never find anything stamping-related at any of our thrift stores (Goodwill, Salvation Army, Rescue Mission). As far as trimming the stamps, I always go down to bare rubber and trim them reeaaaally close! I use 2-way glue on the back (Tombow Mono-Multi, Sailor 2-in-1, or Alene's Tack It Over and Over are a few that work well).
If the images in your 12-piece set are about 1.25" square, then it sounds like you have Seasonal Solids. (I guess the blocks would be 1.5" square.) That set retired in 2002, and there is no SCS gallery category for it, but here's a link to it on eBay: Stampin Up Seasonal Solids Set of 12 Mounted Rubber Stamps | eBay
Lovely as a Tree is still current even today! At the recent SU convention, Shelley said something about that set never dying!!! It is still on my wish list!!!! I keep seeing how it can be used and think, I'll get it on the next order!!!!
Binkiemonstermom, Lovely as a Tree was one of my first sets. Thousands of stamps later, it is probably my most used set. I think you will not regret buying it.
I just shove one scissors blade under the foam and cut away both the rubber and the foam without unmounting the stamp. The blade might scrap the wood a bit, and the end result might not look pretty, but I did get rid of the halo effect and they stayed mounted (until years later when I unmounted them all). You might want to try this with your least favourite stamp first, if you decide to do this.
Congrats on your find, you did well I've enjoyed Lovely as a Tree over the years, it's nice images produce wonderful cards.
Binkiemonstermom: don't wait too long or you may regret waiting, like me with the Nature Silhouettes set. This set was on my list so many times and I would end up altering my order.
You gals are GREAT! Thank you so much for the answers - and stamping them first before attempting to cut is brilliant. I always hated cutting out the stamps and wasn't looking forward to doing these.
Yes, the icon set is that one - Seasonal Solids. Imagine that - a logical name!
This is the first time I ever found any, so keep looking. The next trip could be your lucky day. (they were with the books, in my store)
I trim my stamps all the time without unmounting them. I use small scissors like the size in a manicure kit and trim at an angle so I can cut away the excess rubber without cutting the foam. I don't usually cut the foam because I like having the foam larger than the rubber so the stamp has more stability (especially the skinny pieces).
I have microwaved stamps to loosen the sticky and then was able to reapply. In case you do need to remove them. I don't know how this would work with such "vintage" stamps.
I have done this as well. About 10 seconds in my microwave. Mine is old so only about 600 watts I think. So it could be less than 10 seconds in a higher wattage mike.
