Default Alternative to Gamsol

You can also use neutral/natural paste shoe polish and a paper stump to blend/shade with colored pencils. As someone who tends to be clumsy and knock things over the risk factor is high with mineral spirits. Plus the shoe polish is smaller and a lot more portable than even a small can of the spirits.

I just uploaded the first card I made using this technique.

Thanks for the tip..........I have that kind of polish at home already, and I was really worried about spillage with the spirits!

Wondering what is a paper stump? Never heard of one before this.

They have them at AC Moore and Michaels, they are also known as Tortillions. They are basically just paper stumps that are used for blending. you'll find them in the art section.

Have to tell you, Cork, that I love your avatar! What a sweet little puppy!!!

You can also buy a small plastic bottle with a dauber lid so that you can dip your stump and wet it. Nasco carries them. If you have a hard time finding them let me know I'll email you the product code. When you get a stump make sure they're the solid ones not the ones that looked like they're wrapped. This way you can sharpen them with an emery board or sanding block to clean off the color and keep them pointed.

You're probably more likely to find them at an art supply store rather than a craft shop, near the drawing pencils and/or chalks. They basically look like thick paper pencils.

I found some at Dick Blick on line. Is this what you are talking about?

I've ordered from Dick Blick before and have had good luck.

Thanks for the tip on shoe polish. It sounds like a safe, inexpensive solution.
