Default Selling Cards on Consignment - Questions

Hi all

A local flower shop has agreed to display sell some of my cards. After discussions about buying them outright or putting them on consignment, they thought it was in their best interest to go the consignment route.

I would provide the display and maintain the stash of cards. Here is my question..... What is a reasonable % (or $$ value) that the Flower Shop should get on each sale. Eg.... If I wanted to walk away with $3.00 per card and sold the cards at $4.00 each - that would leave the store with a $1.00 profit. Is that reasonable, too much, too little. I have no idea where to start with this. Up until now, I have been selling my cards at work but want to branch out.

Thank you.

Elizabeth

I would say that you are lucky that you can tell them what percentage THEY will get. I had someone contact me about my cards (which I have agreed to do, btw) and she told me that I have to tell her what amount I need to get out of each card, then she will price them accordingly, most of which will be doubled in price. I was a little concerned at first because even though I will make less than when I sell them myself (ETSY, etc.) and I won't be paying any fees (ETSY, Paypal, etc) I didn't want to sell myself "short". She did not see it as a problem, because she has a "higher end" boutique and she has seen handmade cards sell easily in the $4-6 range. We shall see....

Hi tdodd.....

I originally wanted to sell the cards to them for $3.00 each. But she said that she would have to sell them for $6.00 each and she didn't think she would get that for each card. That is when I suggested that I would supply the cards and display and she could take a cut on each card, but everything would be mine.

We haven't finalized the numbers yet - that is why I am here. She wanted me to suggest a number or % and I don't want to short change myself. Needless to say - I am not going to sell the cards for $6.00 and give her a $3.00 cut on each card.

I get 60% commission and my cards retail for $6. I also sell 3x3 cards for $4 and sell a lot of those. Hallmark cards are costing $5 or more these days so I don't think it is unreasonable to charge $6 for a card.
