Default secure online ordering?

I was going to order some stamping items from an internet site, but when it got the page where I was supposed to enter credit card information, the url did not change to https://, which I'm used to seeing at payment pages. I emailed the company to ask if the site was secure, and they said it was, but I have always seen the https:// to indicate security, so I am still hesitant to input my credit card information. Am I missing a new trend in secure pages, or am I right to be worried?

Hello,
From my experience, if the site was truly 128 bit encrypted on its payment page the url would change to https:// and the gold lock on the bottom right would appear (Internet Explorer) When you double click the gold lock it tells you who the certificate is issue to. There may be some sites where only the gold key appears and the url does not change, but the gold key indicates data encryption.

Thanks for this very helpful information. I buy online all the time and I never new about the https:// or the gold lock. I'll make sure to look out for these. Thank you!

My husband is a internet security and fraud guru... NEVER give out ANY information without the LOCK and "https"!!! And NEVER email any information. Fax and telephone is okay, as long as you know to whom you are sending the information.

"Information" includes address, banking, CC, SSN, even children's names! I go nuts everytime I see a minivan with the names of the children on the back window. Or a mailbox/house with the habitants name posted.

There are bad people all over the place just waiting for a chance to lie, steal and cheat... Thank goodness we have so many good people here!!!

When you log onto a store, it may say http://, however, once you hit the checkout button, the address should change to https://.

If it doesn't, I would see if there might be a way to call your payment in of pay through paypal.

Hugs,
Gina K.

Thanks everyone. There doesn't appear to be a key or lock or any of that stuff, and the url does not change, so I will do my order by phone. They think they are secure, but since I can't see any evidence of it, I will not take the chance!
