Re-purposing wine carriers/totes from grocery store
Spring cleaning has reared it's ugly head! I recently found (and I am embarresed to say :oops a TON of those wine totes that hold 4 bottles of wine from Publix and Kroger. I know I can take them back and recycle, but I thought I would check and see if anyone has an uber cool idea to try? Let me know your thoughts!
Thanks
A picture would be great. Maybe a description/measurements too. The idea sounds interesting. We might be asking you to ship a few our way. LOL!

She might actually be talking about the polyester little totes like the re-useable grocery bags. I'm on the east coast and my Giant grocery store just started carrying them (which is really funny since like one of the earlier posters said, we can't get wine in most of the grocery stores). Awhile back, Target had the same thing but a six-bottle (more for water bottles) tote in their dollar section.
What about using them as gift bags for someone? Have one section for handmade cards, one with some cookies or something, one for a drink of some sort, etc.? If they are the polyester little bags like my store has, depending on the color and what design might already be on them, what about cutting some felt flowers or whatever out and doing a quick sewing them on the outside to help cover up an existing design/writing or to go with whatever "theme" of items used inside the bag?

Are they like the drink carriers (cardboard) that McDonalds, etc used to have but bigger? Wow, they'd be awesome to alter and put little gifties in for teachers, etc. How fun! Wish we had those up by me!
Wine and beer in the grocery stores up here, but none of those totes.

What she is talking about is a canvas tote that has 4 sections for 4 bottles of wine. They are great totes, but like georgia I have a bunch as well. Publix gives them free when you buy 4 bottles of wine.
THe ones at my Publix are a dark red color with the Publix logo on it. Would love to have ideas of what to do with them!
What a great gift bag that would be for the "recipes in a jar" or snack filled jars! Cover the logo with something seasonal or chipboard letters, festooned with ribbons, flowers, oh, the list goes on... Canvas is such a great material to work with!
Okay, I've taken a few pics for reference and the measurements are as follows:
The blue Kroger bag is 9 1/2" wide, 6 1/2" deep, 10 1/4" high it has dividers inside and holds 6 bottles. The handles have velcro that wraps around the top that keeps them held together.
The pictures for the Publix bag are in the next post. Apparently I can only have 3 attachments per post.
The burgandy Publix bag is 7 1/2" wide, 7" deep, 11" high it has dividers inside and holds 4 bottles.
Both of the bags are some type of a woven fabric that is thin, but fairly strong as it can hold 4 & 6 bottles of wine. The Publix fabric is a good bit thicker.
I am so excited to see responses and can't wait to hear more ideas! Keep em' coming
I would save one to put shoes in when you travel.Or as a previous poster said-use it as a gift bag - flip flops, beach towel, sunscreen, and a good book would make a great spring/summer birthday gift.
Wow, great colors on the bags. No Krogers by me but my parents have tons by them. I may have to buy a bunch of wine when I go visit them just to get a bag (if their store has them). It looks like from the photo a great match for the brilliant blue or ballet blue colors that are retiring. I could use them for teacher gift bags (pencils on one pocket, glue in another, etc. for "welcome back to school" gifts). Love the publix one (design and all). That one would be great for a Christmas gift bag - actually either one would. The blue one could have snowflakes on it.
You could put a bottle of wine, loaf of bread, some cheese and some nice meat, etc. in there and give it as a house warming gift....heck you could even use it for a "couple's picnic...I won't throw them out or recycle either...keep them!!
Your grocery stores give those away??? Seriously? WOW! Aren't you luck. I have looked for them around me and can't find them. Saw one in a wine shop when I visted my mom in St. Louis recently and they wanted $10 for it. Decided I didn't need it that bad.
Love reading all the repurpose suggestions listed!

Too cool! I have a six pack one......gotten at a local liquor store. But they don't have anyore. I always take it back and reuse. They woud be great for carrying the glass bottles of European Soda that Wegmans sells.
You could line each square with cardboard, cut off the handles, turn it on its side and use one to store pens and pencils. We have cardboard ones here in Australia, but DH and I dont drink at all.
I thought you were referred to the heavy duty cardboard ones. Those are the ones I have. Kinda like the milk carton carriers that I saw a lot of around Easter, only wine bottle size. Then I wondered why you weren't refilling them???!!? ;)
Do you have a Joann's close by, or a place where you could get ahold of that foam that comes in squares for pillows? I'm not sure how thick it would need to be, but cutting the foam to fit down into each pocket could raise Copics, markers, pencils, etc. so that you could see the tops of them. You could keep them organized and travel ready at the same time.

I'm just now looking at all the posts, what great ideas! I was trying to figure out how to cover the entire bag. Never thought about just the logo. DUH!!! Super cute felt flowers cut out with the Cuttlebug, or really big Prima's....hmmmm, now the wheels are turning! Love the beach bag idea. Hmmm, graduations are coming up. Would a tote bag like that be to wierd for boy graduating highschool?? Not with flowers on it of course!!!
Thanks again for all of the great ideas. It is always so interesting to hear different takes on one idea.
Oh, I wanted to mention that Kroger also owns stores called Fred Meyer's. I know that they are on the West coast, not sure what other parts of the country they are located in, but if you have those, they may offer the bags w/ purchase as well.
Depending on what's IN the bag, I doubt too many graduating high school boys would even really notice the bag itself - it's all about the contents. You might have a few that would notice, but for most older (and even a lot of younger) kids, it's all about what's inside.
I don't know how far east the Meyer store's go but I know they do have them in Indiana.
