If you agree to be a hostess for a party, the demo should give you the big catalog for free (SU policy, I believe). Demos do an online request for SU to send the minis to their customers. Or they can get extras to give out at parties.

Mini catalogs are yet another item the demos must purchase, unless they have high enough sales to qualify getting them sent for free. I have to say, that sales level is fairly high, and I would say many, if not most, do not qualify for that. There would be many demos, I'd think, that prefer handing out minis themselves, perhaps to workshop guests, rather than doing a mailing and not knowing if everyone got them, chucked them, whatever.
I have been on my demo's mailing list to receive the mini's forever, but she has told me that she only does that for her best customers. As far as I know they come right from the company to me as they never have any postage on them, etc. She's just a hobby demo so I can't blame her for not wanting to shell out the cash to have them sent out to everyone.
Many demos have them directly shipped to customers, but don't purchase them for every customer since the demo pays for them. If the post office doesn't deliver the minis for whatever reason, the demo still has to pay for those she ordered. Many don't want to risk the post office losing them after they're paid for, so they will order them directly from SU and hand deliver them to customers. Many only give them out to those who purchase a certain amount regularly throughout the year, some give them out to anyone and everyone, while others don't give them out at all and only have a demo copy for you to look at during a workshop. Talk to your demo to see what she does. I used to have a demo who I held workshops for, attended her events, and purchased a hefty chunk from her. She stopped sending me the minis, so I went shopping for a new demo.
