I believe the embossing buddy would fix that problem - or use a dryer sheet in a pinch. I know how frustrating that is! I did a card just two nights ago with a heart in black ep and had spots everywhere. So I tried to make 'lemonade' - I used my silver metallic pencil and colored in my hearts then brayered red all over the paper. It was a little weird looking, but didn't have that same "what had I done" look from before ;)
I have had the same problem with my detail black with or without the embossing buddie and or dryer sheet. I no longer use it and just use black craft with detail clear powder because I got so frustrated. Hope someone else has a solution and if so will post it
I have the same problem with my detail black...I can't figure out how to keep it from getting that cloudy look in the background. I too usually just use another type (regular black EP or black craft with the clear powder)

I find the black EP like that as well. I use a dryer sheet (will be buying an embossing buddy at the next SU party). I then use a small paintbrush to gently remove the powder from where I don't want it. If I accidently remove the EP that I want to stay, I simple resprinkle it on that area. It's a pain but it does work.
I've now had two bottles of detail black that do this. SU graciously replaced the first one, and when the second one did the same thing, I called Demo Services to complain. Here's what the girl told me after going and talking to someone..."This is a natural problem when using dark EP on light paper. You should expect this to happen." Here's what I told her..."I wouldn't use dark EP on dark paper. I use light EP on dark paper so you can see it. This is a defective product and something needs to be done about it. I would hate for one of my customers to be the one having this problem with an SU product." She gave me an incident number and recommended that I send the product in for review, so that's what I'm doing. I'm pretty frustrated.
I'll let you all know what happens from the review.

I would be interested in hearing what happens with this. I wondered if something was wrong with mine also. It had residue all over the outside of the container before I opened it. Then with the results I had I wondered if something was wrong. Maybe I'll put in a call also.
Go ahead and call. Maybe you'll get a more helpful answer. Post what happens if you do call. I'll be interested to hear. Maybe if I'm not the only one complaining, something will be done.
In a way I'm glad to read this. I'm fairly new to SU. I thought I was just inexperienced and doing something wrong. I even bought an Embossing Buddy but it didn't help.
I have this happen when I use glossy paper......even with the embossing buddy it sticks to everything. Can't say as I've ever seen in happen on US white though......

I just received my replacement bottle of Black EP - it still left a bit of a residue but not as bad as the first bottle.
I have to play with it a bit more (I just dumped some on my CS than poured back into the bottle)
I do think it's a bad batch because my Detail Black doesn't do leave anything behind.
I just used my detail black powder for the first time today and yes it left a mess on my paper too... spots everywhere and I tried to clear it off before I embossed but made a bigger mess and it sticks to everything... :(
My friend swears by this stuff, so i just got some. It was so messy. I tried to erase the black dust after I embossed and the embossed part smeared black everytime i touched it. It just doesn't seem right. I tried with the corn starch, but it wasn't any better. I am going to my friend's place on Fri to use her embossing buddy and will see what happens then. any suggestions? :(
I just sold a jar of the detail black to a friend two weeks ago. I was stamping with her last night. She used the embossing buddy religiously, even tried using a paint brush to take of the extra. It looked terrible, like it had soot all over it.
So I had her try mine, which I purchased about six months ago. It worked perfectly without a trace of extra powder on the cardstock.
There is definitely a "bad batch" out there. I'm calling DS on Monday to tell them and have it replaced. I'll let you know what they say.
I just did a card where I really wanted a deep black image against a black cs. Then again on red. On the red, the black ep was spotting up the piece, so I tried my embossing buddy which worked perfectly, first time I have used it. Now I know what it is used for. Before I used the embossing buddy I tried to use the clear EP, the black looked faded against the red. What a difference with black craft with Black ep.
The clear EP just does not give you that true black color. The card below is the card that I did the black on black and then on red. I used Black craft on both the black cs and the red cs.
I agree that embossing buddy is a necessity everytime you use embossing powder - detail or regular size.
I also agree that it is best to use a paintbrush (I use a thin bladed angled style) to remove any lingering "specs" that are close to the image being embossed.
The last trick I use is a quick flick of a finger on the back side of the card - it seems to snap any remaining stray particles off the face of the paper.
I have never used SU detail powder because I started using it before SU had it in their catalog...whatever I had didn't work very well (the black smudging everyone talked about was a real problem with it as well).
I stumbled on a wonderful brand of embossing powders at a local state fair - the company's name is Stampworks (I believe they are out of Washington state) and the phone number on the side of the bottle is
626-821-3110 .
They claim their embossing powder is made from Nylon (other powders are made of plastic?) and that it has different thermal qualities. I decided to try it and it was wonderful stuff. I have purchased many different detail powders from them through the years and they all work VERY well (their detail copper powder is a must have.)
So those of you who think that the SU detail powder isn't as good as it should be might want to try another brand and compare results.
I called SU and they are replacing it. The customer support lady said she would call me back if SU wants the defective powder back. I actually hope they take it back so they can test it. I'm hoping the new batch works or else I will have them replace that one as well.
