I think it has to do with losing the context of the photo.. If you have have a picture of someone doing something, and you cut around just that person, you run the risk of seeing the picture later and realizing you have no clue what is going on in hte picture. Sure journaling might solve the problem, but IMHO, it still looks tacky.
As for eyelets, I'm not sure they are out completely. I just think that not everyone feels the need to have one on everything. I am still trying to get eyelets to flare nicely on both sides.
