It doesn't bother me one way or the other. As you can see, I'm one of those who do not have a pic for an avatar.
There are a number of reasons for it. I do have some concerns about internet privacy - I don't post pics here or any other forum I'm a member of and I don't have facebook or myspace or anything similar. Also, when I first joined SCS, it would not have been a good thing if anyone connected to my then job could find me because I had posted a pic. Not because I posted inappropriately, but because there was a potential for others to make it a problem for me. Like another poster, I don't enjoy having my picture taken & avoid it whenever possible - so there aren't very many pictures of me I like.
Besides, it's just way to much fun to play with my little chickie avatar, changing her to fit the seasons/holidays etc.

the only thing about avatar's that catches my attention is when people change them... ( esp. people you "talk" to all the time online in the forums...) it takes me a while to get used to the change so, if its a photo or a blinkie or a pet doesn't really matter. so for that reason i tend to leave my photos alone on sites for years...
I chose my picture because it's one that makes me feel peaceful to look at. It was after a big snowstorm a few years ago. Although we do get snow here, we don't often get in the quantities shown here, especially this last winter. I don't facebook, I don't post pics of my family scrapbook pages online, I don't tell exactly where I live. I am a worrywart by nature, and I wouldn't want anyone to be able to access random information about me, especially identifying pictures, like your neighbourhood. I also am a teacher, and although I don't do anything shameful, I don't like the idea of students, parents, or district staff being able to access my private life.
I don't care either way. I do like avatars that don't change. I'm visual when it comes to memory so it helps me to recognize the poster whether their pic is of their dog, their shoes, or their face.
It doesn't bother me. I don't have mine up because as others mentioned I don't really like pictures of myself. I don't like how I look and try to avoid having my picture taken whenever possible. Last time I did it willingly was 16 years ago at my wedding.
That being said I also don't have ANY photo up because I would have to ask my DH how to do it and he is not very patient at explaining computer things. He spends lots of time on our computer and knows how to do "everything" and because it's so very interesting for him he can learn and retain all this stuff. Me....I have so many other things to keep in my head, the running of the rest of our lives and taking care of an elderly parent so remembering stuff that he's shown me ONCE maybe 6 months ago about this computer just doesn't get the storage space in my brain.
I love seeing others pics even if they aren't of themselves and one day I suppose I will get up the nerve to ask DH to help post SOMETHING even if it's not a personal pic.
I use an avatar with each post. It is a mocha latte - and seemed appropriate because I wrote two books - one about chocolate the other about coffee. If someone wants to see what I look like, there are a bunch of pictures posted in my public profile.
For those concerned about pictures/info on the web - well, I work in finance and security. I probably don't realize all info you send to thousands of people every time you swipe a credit card in a store. You don't need to go online to have all your info out there.
FYI -- look at the web addresses you frequent. If they start with https they are a secure website and there is no need to worry about using your credit card. If the address (where they ask for your credit card info) starts with http (no "s") they are not secure - don't use a credit card there.

Karla-kamigh, I think your photo is VERY attractive! I like seeing how people look but don't feel I need a photo... one can get a feel for how posters think and live by their comments. Everyone I have had anything to do with on Splitcoaststampers has been wonderful. Maybe only great people want to relate with others by making beautiful cards for them???

My hubby told me awhile ago that he did not like me using a pic of our kids for my advatar online. Well I used that same pic for 3 years. Thought it was time for a change. Kept his wish in mind so I just changed my advatar 2 days ago. I decided to us a Habusicus flower as there is an inside joke going on in one of my chat threads here on scs. As I had tons of these flowers in my backyard when I lived in Hawaii, I just loved these flowers so that is how I chose my new advatar.

I did change my avatar awhile back from African Grey parrot to Himalayan cat, both honoring beloved pets... but I don't post very frequently (too many other obligations taking my time) so I doubt if it caused anyone any recognition problems.

I agree that as a rule, those who post on SCS are wonderful. Many are extremely giving as well - lots of RAK posts too. I DO enjoy seeing what someone looks like, (I'm a very visual person) but nice is nice - whether I see a pic or not.

I would post a picture if someone in my family ever took a picture of me. I swear the only pictures of me are years old. I have tried to take a picture of myself but it looks stupid. Now that summer is here maybe I can get a picture taken by one of the kids.

Zero days for me! I am retired!! I still consider myself a teacher. I tutor some of the neighborhood kids now and probably have about 8 more sessions getting ready for final exams. Our schools used to get out right at Memorial Day but now I think it is June 11. The state decided they didn't want anyone starting school as early as we did back then.
Oh, man, am I jealous!!! But at least I'm down to one now!
Doesn't bother me if there are no pictures. Not being technically fluent (aka computer illiterate) has it's drawbacks. Heck..I just started a gallery and I joined this site yonks ago! Besides pictures of me have a tendency to frighten children and small animals!
Doesn't bother me if I see a face or not. Personal choice. I've always been particularly self-conscious of photos of my face. I might think about adding one to my Blog now that I have my braces off (woo hoo - I can eat crunchy apples ) - I guess I never really thought about it before so it is interesting to read what people think.
I like to change my Avatar every so often on SCS because I love to take photos of birds and flowers. My most recent Avatar is a pic of the Rainbow Lorikeets at my bird feeder on my decking. Much much prettier than a pic of me. ;)

It doesn't bother me on message boards except when people change their avatar and I don't know who they are anymore. I rarely read user names. I'm very visual, so I go by avatars to recognize people. Having said that, I'm not really on any message boards enough to really get to know a lot of people, but I do recognize some here and there.
Also having said that, I just changed my avatar a few weeks ago myself. My old photo was a few years old. Not that I changed much, but I liked the new photo better. Besides, I don't think there are a whole lot of people here that would notice the change anyway.
For some reason it does kind of bother me though when bloggers don't have a photo of themselves up on their blogs. I'll still read the blog, but I don't feel quite as much of a connection with them. I think it goes back to me being very visual. I just like to know what the writer/creator looks like. It's not a real big deal, though, and I certainly can understand if someone feels uncomfortable posting their photo online.
