So I'm playing around making bottle cap pins and decide that I wanted a hole in one of them to string a ribbon through. Briilliantly, I decided that the awl/punch in my crafter's tool kit would be perfect for the job! Pull out the awl, set it on my bottle cap (making sure, of course, to have it all on my self-healing mat), and tap away with my hammer.
Um, ladies... this does not work unless your idea of working is a bent awl with a mangled tip. Now... where can I purchase just the awl to replace the one I so brilliantly destroyed??
Bummer! It amazes me that the awl bent - not very high quality steel, obviously.
I think I would try your local hardware store for a replacement...whatever you would get there wouldn't bend with a little wham from a hammer.
Another place to look would be an antiques/collectibles store...look in their sewing stuff. The type of awl you find there would be more like what you bent - the sewing kind is never intended to be hammered, the holes are made just by brut force pressure
Thanks for sharing your tale of woe. We've all done something like it and I'm sure we're not done amazing ourselves yet!
Definitely either call Demo Support or ask your demo to do so on your behalf. They are good about replacing missing stamps, you might catch a break, or at least get an idea for a replacement source.
Let us know.
"FORMICA - the wonder substance!!" was what my DS and his friends would say when they did weird stuff on my table two decades ago. They would laugh now if they saw what kind of weird crafting stuff I do on it.

Ooooh, my downline's DH bent her paper piercing tool thinking he could use it to put starter holes for drilling screws in the laminate shelves he was putting up in her stamp room!!! The whole tip was bent sideways and the very tip was bent into a sort of hook shape, so it is totally worthless.
I think the only reason he is still alive was that he was, after all, putting the shelves in HER stamp room!
I don't think DS will replace an item in the crafters tool kit...you pretty much have to buy a second, but it's worth calling to see. That's what I told my downline...I don't think she's called yet. She bought one of Memory Makers and it is too long to fit into the kit
Well, it looks like I'm not alone in having brilliant moments!
Janine, that's pretty much what mine looked like! Guess I was doing a little more than tap tap tapping it.
I will try DS, but am not holding out too much hope that they'll replace it when I truly wasn't using it for what it was designed. I'll just have to keep my eye out for something comparable. Gotta have one - it really is a good tool and I did use it for paper piercing, both at home and at workshops.
I hammered eyelets on my table and thought I had the mat underneath and way to go me, I have some nice round holes on my table.
I accidentally did this on my sister-in-law's table a few hours after she had mentioned that if she sees a scratch on an appliance it drives her crazy. Dh was standing there when I did it, but she wasn't so out of respect for her sanity, I didn't mention it.
