To browse the gallery and leave comments on cards that were made for reasons other than a challenge! I was looking through my gallery today and noticed the cards that were not made for a challenge had very few comments. I'm wondering how many other cards I've missed commenting on because they weren't made for any special reason other than the pure joy of making a card. so I dare you to browse the gallery and comment on other cards. You could be making someone's day special while finding beautiful creations you might otherwise have missed!

Wow! Thank you Amber! I try to do that too, but I know I miss some and I certainly can't comment on them all but I try to comment on as many as possible!

Me too. I can't imagine missing anything that's been posted.
What I try to do every week is to comment on the cards I put in my faves that have just a few comments, or none. Some weeks there aren't many...other weeks it's a lot.
I'm impressed with those of you who see every single card each day! I try to look at a lot, but I'm sure I've missed some. And I am commenting more now than I ever did before. I'm having a great time in the gallery, that's for sure.
I usually comment on cards that have no comments, people do need encouragement. . I have a friend who got me involved at SCS,, she hasn't been by here in the 4 years I have been stamping because she never got a comment on her cards.
You think about it, sometimes you will get 50 people who look, but never say "what a great job".

I look at gallery cards often, certainly not every day and never every single card! I wouldn't get anything else done if I looked at every single card. How do you manage that?

I wanted to touch on this for a moment. Comments are nice, but the number of views lets the user know their card is being seen, and hopefully inspiring other stampers. But, playing in the weekly challenges is the key I believe. It allows a new user to get to know people by sharing their card and exchanging comments with those who played the challenge and those who are "just looking." Before you know it, you've received both comments and views, AND made some new friends.
This year I am making a point to not only leave comments on cards with little to no comments, and to list at least one "new to me" stamper on my Favorites List on Sunday. Nothing in my humble opinion encourages a stamper more than to receive a notification on one of her cards telling her she has been included in the General Stamping Favorites List.
The only resolutions that I made for this year were to create more and to spend more time in the galleries, commenting as often as possible. I've instituted a practice of setting aside time each evening to look at the cards uploaded that day and spread some love around. My time is somewhat limited, so I don't get to see ALL of them, but I figure adding comments where there aren't many (or any) is a way to "pay it forward", and I've discovered some AMAZING galleries that I would otherwise have missed.
As to the challenges: yes, it is a great way to get to know others here - and to get known - but it's not everybody's thing. Sometimes you just want to do what you want to do, and the "rules" of a challenge may feel restrictive to some. Others may feel too shy to put themselves "out there". I think that's why I like doing what I'm doing. Those who don't join the challenges - for whatever reason - still get a chance to be seen and appreciated, even if it's only by a few... That being said, whatever challenge I join (or host), I try to comment on as many cards there as possible (which totally validates your point, Susie).
On the "favorites" thing: My personal quirk here is, if you like something I made well enough to add it to your favorites, could you please take a quick sec to tell me why? Was it the ribbon? The colors? The layout? Spelling it out just a wee bit helps us to know what is appealing to others and, in my mind, helps us become better...
I love Splitcoast and come here daily - even if I don't have time for anything but keeping up with conversations that interest me - and it has always been such a welcoming, friendly, helpful place! Threads like this reinforce that opinion
I tried an experiment and it does prove that comments come more on the cards made for challenges than cards made just because! I'm doing as Sue and trying to go through the gallery each day and comment on as many cards as possible, especially those that were created just for the pure fun of it! I also agree about commenting on cards you've fav'd. I went back in and saw I had fav'd one but didn't comment on it and thought what was I thinking? Especially true if I CASE one I fav'd. I get so much inspiration on SCS!
When I first started posting on SCS, Michelle Goodrich was my encourager. She left comments on my cards even when they didn't deserve a nice comment. I've never forgotten her. I know there are several encouragers here and I for one appreciate all you do.
The challenges encourage me to think outside my little box, but it is nice to get unexpected comments.
I love being part of this community and sing its praises every chance I get.

This is a great reminder! There are sooooooo many beautiful and inspiring cards here! I, too am guilty of looking and not commenting...I will try to be more thoughtful! Love all the work that goes into each and every card whether it's one of my favorites or not! Guess I better favorite more, too! Thank you!
Getting a comment or even a suggestion on a card you created can just make my day. I appreciate them so much and it also encourages me to look at the gallery of the commenter

Another good point! I tend to go visit the gallery of the person who took time to comment on mine!
This is great! To be honest, I don't browse the gallery every day, but I have never noticed the "post a comment" on the bottom before. You are all correct, if we enjoy the cards everyone is sharing we should comment. Now that I know it is there, I will do it more often. Maybe more folks are like me and didn't even know it was there, so hopefully more folks will do it now. How can you tell how many comments the cards have?
Would be nice if we could click on a like button, would love to let people know that I did like their card!
There is a "Like" button. It's the heart icon that is right under the picture of the card. It puts it into your "Favorites" album--or do you mean a Like button just to show that you like it but that it does NOT go into your Favorites album?

Good thread, Kathy. I've definitely noticed with my own cards that I get more comments if I made it for a challenge than if not.
I don't have time to look at everything that is posted every day so what I do is search the gallery for everything CAS since that is my style and I'm one of the moderators for the weekly CAS Favorites thread. But when I enter challenges that interest me, I look at everything posted for that challenge whether it is CAS or not so I do a bit of non-CAS viewing and commenting.
I think for most of us it comes down to limited time on SCS, not lack of desire to add comments.

In my retirement, I browse the gallery and comment daily on a few cards. I know it makes a difference to me, and takes little time to do. I try to include one specific detail that I admired. I really appreciate when someone includes many details about their creations on the site - I dislike having to go to someone's blog or other site to get the details - call me anti-virus catching but I am gun shy about social media! I'm coming off a card hiatus, and began considering my SU purchases for some new look cards. I did a trial run on a screen fold card with an Easter theme. When I'm happy with the content, it will be a post. The 2-pocket treat tutorial yielded Valentine's Day goodies, and I finally figured out how to equalize the diaper fold sides on another treat holder! I truly enjoy viewing others' efforts at creativity. It reminds me to keep trying!

I use to upload almost every card that I made. Over the years, I got a bit discouraged because there were hardly any comments. I use to join in some of the challenges. I stopped uploading my cards and started putting some of them on my blog. Even now, I don't get very much traffic on my blog. I know my cards are good and that they are being seen, but for some reason, I just don't get many comments. I am even on a design team and they still don't leave comments (unless they are going to get something from the company). I wish I knew why this is the way it is.
Another thing I noticed is that if a card is not made with a Stampin Up stamp, they do not get many comments or favored. Is there a rule about posting a card that is not using a stampin up stamp?
I get very few comments unless I made the card for a challenge. It doesn't matter if the stamps are stamp in up or not. I am 95% stampin up so that's not the issue. I think people are like I was. They view cards they like and even favorite them but don't take that extra step to comment. I am now commenting more than I ever have because I know how good it feels to read those comments.
muscrat, I just went to your gallery and your work is beautiful. As far as I could see, every one of them had at least one comment, so I am not the only one who thinks your work is impressive!

Thanks Jennifer. There are some with no comments at all but most range between 1-3 comments unless they were made for a challenge. Then you tend to get others in the challenge commenting.

I tend to agree with you. It seems like most people who do demos online, assume you have everything that Stamping' Up carries. I happen to have very little from them. The few I have were purchased from my stamp club, after they didn't want to keep it in their library any more because it was old or hardly borrowed. I don't pay much for them! I, personally am not a big fan of their line. I actually like Gina K. and Sparkle N Sprinkle better but I don't have much of any one line. I really don't like SU paper. Gina K.'s is so much better!
Kathy, what a great topic. Chaos mom used to host favorites of the week and suggested that each of us include someone who is deserving and received no comments. I don't do many challenges and when time permits, I go through the whole gallery for that very reason. How sad that so many talented people go unnoticed. Others prefer never to comment resulting in no comments for their cards. What a tough subject but glad to see it discussed.
I don't have a gallery on SCS. I don't have a blog. I don't belong to a design team. I don't do challenges. So I can't speak to what it feels like to not get comments. I keep a personal gallery, so I can keep track of what I have made, how it was made, what techniques were used, etc. for my own benefit. If others are posting to a gallery on SCS to share ideas, then I would think that if they were favorited would be enough. Sometimes the comments are not very helpful anyway, as five "So cute" or "Beautiful" comments don't mean too much. I do browse the galleries, but seldom comment. Occasionally I have asked a question, but hardly ever get an answer unless I PM. I just guessed that no one checked to see if anyone comments or not, due to my experiences. I do favorite cards if I get inspiration to CASE or use some aspect of the card. I don't have time to comment or do I often even think about doing so if I did have the time. I make cards for my and the recipients pleasure. If I hear that a recipient likes my card, I do feel good, but only because it was made for them, just as a gift would be, so acknowledgement is only polite. However, I think that is different from posting a picture or a scan of something you made and expecting comments for complete strangers. As I said before, the fact that someone put a card in their favorites should tell you it was admired.

There's no rule at all!! Sure, when you are uploading the only specific galleries for stamps are SU, but so long as people use the correct keywords, their cards will show up in the keyword-driven Company Galleries. We have a whole long list of those if you click on Company Galleries on the gallery home page. I often use those for inspiration. Just as I use the Technique Spotlight galleries to browse, too.
Personally my biggest issue is time. I only work part time, but have other commitments and interests, so when it comes to commenting I do tend to focus more on cards uploaded for challenges I have participated in. An advantage of volunteering as a gallery mod is that I get to see a lot of cards I would not otherwise have seen ;-), so I try to comment on a few of those each day. And out of courtesy, even when I don't have time to comment on all the uploads for a challenge I have played along with, I try to remember to leave a comment on the hostess's challenge sample.

If anyone asks a question when they comment I always send them a pm thanking them for the comment and answering their question. And every question I've asked, the person has done the same. Love that.

I am going to assume from your post that you browse SCS for inspiration only. Splitcoaststampers is a place where stampers of every level of experience can share a card without the fear of negative comments. For those who seek more feedback or mentorship, finding a thread like this where the stamper can take part in a deeper dialogue of the topic is beneficial.
I have struggled with many of the comments on this thread. I had a blog first, and jumped into some big online challenges, without the understanding of how a challenge(s) really worked and got frustrated very fast. To the point of almost giving the whole craft up. I had the pleasure of meeting a Dirty Dozen Designer in 2010 who took me under her wing and really gave me some good advice. She told me to start a gallery on SCS, play in the weekly challenges, and get to know people and vice versa.
I didn't get many comments in the beginning because my cards weren't in a weekly challenge (*see my comment at the beginning of this thread*). After 5 years of posting on SCS and getting to know people that has changed. Please remember SCS has an estimated 38,000 members. By playing in at least one weekly challenge you can target your audience. And before you know it, you'll have met many of the membership.
We all have demands on our time, and priorities that are important to us personally. So, we must make the decision on how much time we want to dedicate to our craft, and what we want to achieve from our efforts.
